In collaboration with supervisor, this position is responsible for providing guidance in registration, counseling, mentoring, and tutorial services, and assisting in the monitoring of eligibility records for student-athletes. Serve as academic advisor to the Student Athletes in specific sports as assigned. Work with various sports with recruiting of prospective student-athletes.

This position will be filled as an Academic Support Services Advisor or Assistant Director of Academic Support Services based on candidate's education and experience.
What You'll Be Doing
STUDENT ADVISING & ACADEMIC SUPPORT
- Monitor the academic performance of assigned student-athletes, including eligibility and progress toward graduation.
- Assist students in evaluating and determining their interests and abilities, and help students link their interests/abilities with majors/programs
- Guide students in developing a plan of study that meets all degree and eligibility requirements and fits within their timeline for graduation
- Communicate with students regarding difficulties they are having with a class or classes, and provide support to students who are on academic probation
- Coach students in development of professional behaviors
- Provide guidance about graduate/professional school; career/internship opportunities and the job search process; and help student’s link learning and professional preparation in the workplace
- Provide assistance during major and career exploration, and discuss opportunities with students wishing to change their major to another school/college
- Review student grades and communicate with them about necessary schedule changes
- Research and provide feedback on best practices to help students link interests/abilities with majors/programs
- Responsible for monitoring course registration and scheduling for student-athletes, including maintenance of class schedules and bookstore requests
- Identify and assign mentors and tutors to student-athletes
- Confer with prospective and current transfer students regarding application of transfer credits and course equivalencies
- Maintain a consistent pattern of contact with each advisee to encourage a trusting mentor/coaching connection through multiple channels of communication
- Build and maintain contacts with other College/Department advising units and programs, campus offices, and peer institutions to maximize "best practices" and strategies.
- Serve as a reference for student-athletes to departmental and on-campus services available to them
- Responsible for both prevention and detection of breaches of Purdue University, Big Ten Conference and NCAA rules and regulations as part of the department of Athletic Academic Support Services commitment to ethics and compliance regarding academic integrity.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
- Develops work plans, policies and reports in accordance with established department objectives.
- Play an integral role and represent department on committees established to design and implement changes to University policies and procedures.
- Develop NCAA eligibility reports, and coordinate training of NCAA eligibility regulations to entry-level advising staff.
- Compile reports as required by the Big Ten Conference, NCAA, Athletics Director, Athletic Affairs Committee, Sr. Associate Athletics Director
- Student Services and their respective Director within athletics academic support to whom they report
- Initiate and prepare administrative reports and documents
- Complete necessary paperwork and forms for proper maintenance of student records
- Complete required certifications related to handling student data (e.g. FERPA, GLBA)
- Participate in staff meetings
- Track batch registration simulations and communicate scheduling issues to appropriate designees
- Provide nominations for, and recognition of, students
COMMUNICATION
- Communicates with other department and University administrators; resolves or assists with the resolution of sensitive issues.
- Provides student letters of recommendation, at the discretion of the advisor.
- Build and maintain contacts with other College/Department advising units.
- Communicate via email, phone, and in-person with students, family members, coaches, university faculty and staff.
- Confer with incoming students via email and phone prior to their arrival on campus as necessary.
- Make explicit students’ responsibility for their own academic and professional success
RECRUITING
- Participate with on-campus recruiting.
- Meet with prospective student-athletes and their parents to review athletic academic services and facilities.
- Facilitate on-campus meetings with appropriate academic school representatives as necessary.

What We're Looking For:
Academic Support Services Advisor (P2) Requirements:
- Master's Degree required
- Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience required
- Experience with student advising or student services preferred
- Must have a strong interest in providing academic and personal support to student-athletes; excellent oral, written and presentation skills, strong work ethic and self-starter, organizational skills and great attention to detail.
- Must have working knowledge of NCAA academic eligibility and recruiting rules/procedures.
- Working in the field of student-athlete support services is not limited to the traditional work week, therefore the candidate must be willing to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.
- Planning, problem-solving, organizational, analytical, and customer service skills necessary.
- Interpersonal skills in dealing sensitively with a wide variety of constituents essential.
- Ability to influence and build work relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels.
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks and meet established deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to foster a participative supervisory style that utilizes teamwork to successfully guide the work of others.
- Working knowledge and accountability for NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and Purdue University regulations and submitting documentation as required to the Athletics Compliance Office.
- Personal computer and related software skills, necessary.
Assistant Director - Academic Support Services (P3) Requirements:
- Master’s Degree required
- Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience, preferably with student advising or student services.
- Must have a strong interest in providing academic and personal support to student-athletes; excellent oral, written and presentation skills, strong work ethic and self-starter, organizational skills and great attention to detail
- Must have working knowledge of NCAA academic eligibility and recruiting rules/procedures
- Working in the field of student-athlete support services is not limited to the traditional work week, therefore the candidate must be willing to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends
- Ability to plan and organize work; organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; verbal and written communications skills; ability to read, interpret, instruct, and effectively communicate complex rules and regulations
- Ability to meet established deadlines, ability to effectively communicate with coaches, administrators, student-athletes, parents, faculty and staff
- Ability to influence and build work relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels
- Must be able to foster a participative supervisory style that utilizes teamwork to successfully guide the work of others
- Interpersonal skills in dealing sensitively with a wide variety of constituents essential
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks and meet established deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Ability to analyze, interpret, communicate, and adhere to University, Big Ten Conference, and NCAA policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
