Assistant Professor in Literacy and Language Education (K-6 Elementary Literacy Emphasis)

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Purdue University seeks an assistant professor of literacy and language education with expertise in K-6 elementary reading development, writing, and literacy learning. This position is a 9-month, tenure-track position with a starting date of August 15, 2022. Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching undergraduate courses as part of the elementary education program as well as graduate literacy and language courses
  • Working collaboratively with program and college faculty to revise current courses and field experiences with a focus on improving educational outcomes, integrating critical literacies, and promoting educational equity
  • Coordinating and collaborating in the development of school-based practica
  • Recruiting, advising and mentoring graduate students 
  • Collaborating on learning, discovery, and engagement activities (including seeking external funding to support those activities) within the College of Education, across the university, and with K-6 schools
  • Developing a strong area of research and scholarship that informs theory and effective practice in literacy education
  • Demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice in education through scholarship, teaching, and/or engagement

 

Opportunities exist for the development of online courses and graduate courses, as well as collaboration with journals in the College and with Centers across the University.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Earned doctorate in literacy education, reading education, or a closely related field, with an emphasis in elementary literacy
  • Demonstrated scholarship in elementary reading, writing, literacy, or a closely related field
  • 3+ years of teaching or equivalent school-based/outreach experience (grades K-6) in U.S. schools

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students
  • Experience supervising preservice teachers
  • Experience working with children in grades K-2
  • Research commitment to diversity and inclusion

THE LITERACY AND LANGUAGE (L & L) EDUCATION PROGRAM within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C & I) contributes to a culture of discovery, learning, and engagement in the College of Education. The program offers prospective researchers/scholars and K-12 educators the opportunity to investigate contemporary issues in literacy research and theory as well as pedagogical methods related to literacy and language development with a focus on reading and writing, teaching, learning, assessment, and curriculum. Faculty members are committed to creating and disseminating knowledge relevant to the discipline of literacy and language education; preparing scholars, educators, and leaders in literacy and language education on the local, national, and international levels; and promoting social equity through access to literacy for all learners. L & L PROGRAM FACULTY WITH AN ELEMENTARY LITERACY EDUCATION EMPHASIS share responsibility for the preparation of undergraduate Elementary Education majors. These undergraduate students are housed in the College of Education. Program faculty also teach and advise masters and PhD students seeking advanced degrees in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Literacy and Language.
