With a strong commitment to advancing diversity in research, thought and representation, the Department of Nutrition Science in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Purdue University invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of nutrition and chronic diseases, as part of a cluster hiring initiative in Public Health, Health Policy, and Health Equity (https://www.purdue.edu/provost/diversity/equity/cluster.html). A national leader in the graduation of Black and African American doctorates in the physical sciences, computer science, and veterinary medicine over the past 5 years, Purdue’s track record of supporting diversity dates back well over a century and is rooted in our land-grant mission. This cluster, comprised of 14 new faculty members across four colleges—Health and Human Sciences, Liberal Arts, Libraries and Information Studies, and Pharmacy—is just the first wave of a larger, multi-year cluster hiring initiative totaling 40 FTE overall that aims to expand our research enterprise, add to the range of perspectives of our faculty, and promote a supportive community for all students. The appointments would start in August 2022 or a future date subject to negotiation.

The Position

The Department of Nutrition Science in the College of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level with a research focus in the role of nutrition in chronic diseases. The successful candidate’s research expertise, which can span the spectrum of basic to applied sciences to community based participatory research, will complement and strengthen core interests of faculty in the Department.  Findings stemming from the applicant’s work will be relevant to improving the health of populations and the applicant will have the opportunity to partner with experts in health literacy communication, promotion, and community engagement (among others) in order to most effectively disseminate their findings. This will be a nine month appointment with the possibility of internally or externally funded summer support. The successful candidate will bring/build an independent externally funded research program. The individual is also expected to participate in teaching and outreach activities consistent with the appointment and candidate’s area of expertise.

The Department of Nutrition Science
The mission of the Department of Nutrition Science (https://www.purdue.edu/hhs/nutr/) is to conduct the highest caliber nutrition science research, to educate students in a diverse and inclusive environment, and to promote health through engagement with the public. The Department is committed to providing exceptional undergraduate and graduate education and currently has approximately 250 undergraduate students and 35 graduate students. Many opportunities exist for professional development, collaboration, and pilot funding across HHS units and campus-wide (e.g., public health, obesity, gerontology, child/adolescent development, disease prevention, imaging, biomedical engineering).

Requirements

Applicants must hold a PhD in Nutrition Science or a closely related field. Applicants should have postdoctoral experience and demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and the ability to obtain external research funding. Applicants with a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion are preferred.
