Indoor Air Quality Technician, Associate

Associate Indoor Air Quality Technician

This position will serve as an Indoor Air Quality Technician (IAQ) Trainee. The role of trainee includes learning to support all Operations and Maintenance crafts including: the IAQ group, Central Shops, and Zones. Candidates for this position must successfully learn and develop skills in the following areas:  temperature control, mechanical system controls, direct digital controls, electric control systems, testing and balancing, and fume hood balancing.  While entry level, this position must be able to learn to perform preventative maintenance and troubleshooting checks on all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment. At times, overtime may be required.   

 

Required

  • High school diploma/GED. 
  • Ability to successfully complete Module one and two of the Indoor Air Quality Apprenticeship program within 24 months of employment in this position to be promoted to the next level (IAQT).  
  • Strong mechanical aptitude. 
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and interpret technical material and be able to read and interpret various types of blueprints and control schematics. 
  • Basic computer skills and a familiarity with word processors and spreadsheets. 
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 60 lbs. or more occasionally. 
  • Exposed to adverse conditions such as electrical hazards, extreme cold and heat, confined spaces and working from height. 
  • Personal protective equipment required during specific operations. 
  • A valid US or Canadian driver’s license. 

 

Preferred:

  • One year experience in heating, ventilation and air conditioning control or other related area preferred. 

Indoor Air Quality Technician

This individual will perform installation, preventative maintenance trouble shooting and repair of refrigeration and heating/cooling equipment such as, but not limited to; gas and oil fired boilers, furnaces, stoves, ovens, incinerators ,air conditioners, water coolers, refrigerators, freezers, cryostats and other temperature-controlled units, ice-makers, and all other types of refrigeration units, etc. 

There will be an expectation to perform regular preventative maintenance, refrigerant record keeping in accordance with EPA standards and Indiana Code. Individuals must be able to read blueprints, schematics, manufacturer instructions and guidelines.  Position is subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies, fire, and vandalism and after hours pager rotation.  Overtime, scheduled or unscheduled, may be required to accomplish tasks. This position may require working in adverse weather conditions, confined spaces and heights.  Must adhere to Purdue University safety policies, procedures and training. 

Required

  • Requires basic knowledge of trade through education, skills inventory training, and/or apprenticeship program.  
  • Typically requires three years of Heating & Cooling Experience.  
  • Must have or obtain EPA 608 universal certification within first year of employment.  
  • Technical trade school certificate or diploma preferred.  
  • Good oral and written communication skills     
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 to 80 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally    
  • Knowledge of hand tools necessary to accomplish assigned tasks    
  • Willingness to continue education as directed.  
  • Work overtime as required and/or scheduled.  
  • Valid driver's license    

 

Preferred

  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics and manufacturer instructions and guidelines  
  • Industrial, commercial and/or residential heating and cooling and refrigeration experience  
  • Basic computer skills, mathematical calculations

Senior Indoor Air Quality Technician

This individual will provide heating, ventilation and air conditioning maintenance services for the university.  They will utilize a combination of highly complex systems to distribute ultra-clean air and utilities through the building.  Responsibilities encompass the maintenance of sophisticated control and alarm systems that ensure cleanliness and safety. Due to the complexity of the work, specialized training is required to perform all maintenance duties on these building systems. Adherence to strict guidelines/protocols is required to ensure the safety of the emplyees working in the facility and to support the research that is being performed in various areas. Employees will be required to work around hazardous production material (HPM) on a daily basis. 

This individual must be able to instruct and coordinate tasks performed by other craftspeople of the same trade when assistance is needed within the various university buildings. The Senior level employee will establish the proper safety precautions to be observed, instruments to be used, and types of measurements necessary (RPM, Amps, Pressures, etc.) to totally balance HVAC equipment in compliance with university standards. 

There is an obligation to test systems and adjust controls as required to balance system and assure proper functioning. This involves diagnosing problems and determining appropriate repair solutions pertaining to hardware and software within the Electronic Control System.  This individual will erform heating, ventilation and air conditioning work as required in other buildings within the assigned zone. Required to carry a pager.  Subject to 24 hour callback for building system breakdowns and/or emergencies. 

 

Requirements

  • Four years experience in mechanical systems( heating ventilation and air conditioning systems), direct digital controls, pneumatics or related field required.
  • Successfully complete the apprenticeship program within six years of employment date. Including but not limited to completing Birck training matrix and safety training. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and mechanical aptitude required. 
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and interpret technical material necessary. 
  • Ability to use various formulas to calculate proper system settings.  
  • Knowledge of electrical control systems, heating, ventilation, air conditioning units, fan coil units, chilled water and steam distribution equipment, fume hoods and both mechanical and direct digital controls required. 
  • General knowledge of one or more skilled crafts preferred. Ability to successfully complete any supervisory training courses as directed. Computer skills, familiarity with word processor and spreadsheets required. 
  • Ability to read and interpret various types of blueprints and control schematics a must.  
  • Exposed to adverse conditions such as electrical hazards, extreme cold and heat, confined spaces and working from heights.  
  • Personal protective equipment required during specific operations.  Must be able to lift and carry 50 to 80 lbs. frequently, and up to 100 lbs. or more occasionally.  
  • Valid Driver’s License required. 
  • Knowledge of the practices and procedures necessary to perform work in the Nano-Technology building and clean rooms preferred.
