Associate Engineering Technician / Engineering Technician

Job Summary:

 

This position represents a multi-level posting and will be filled as an Associate Engineering Technician or Engineering Technician. The hiring manager will determine the job level based on the skills, experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.

Associate Engineering Technician:

 

The Associate Engineering Technician position is an entry-level role for a technician to develop a broad base of knowledge and skills to become an independent individual contributor who supports students and faculty in their research efforts.  The industry and government sponsored research is primarily focused on building experimental rigs to test new engineering concepts in thermal sciences, acoustics and vibration within the facility operations at Ray W. Herrick Laboratories and associated facilities.

 

The Associate Engineering Technician will work under the direct supervision of the Technical Services Supervisor.  Training for specific, complex, technical skills will be provided on-the-job, however the Associate Engineering Technician may independently complete some fabrication or assembly tasks.  The Lead Engineering Technician, Senior Engineering Technician and Engineering Technician will also provide guidance and direction specifically for support related to design specifications and potential improvements, materials and instrumentation selection. 

 

Required:

  • Associate’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology or related field
  • One (1) year of experience in a specialty discipline (e.g., machinist, electrician, HVAC, pipefitting, sheet metal fabrication, and/or industrial  controls/instrumentation)
    • Experience may include relevant internships, co-operative education, capstone courses, etc.
  • In lieu of a degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience
    • For example, a high school diploma/GED and three (3) years of experience
  • Basic knowledge of the use of hand tools and hand-held power tools
  • Strong understanding of good safety practices
  • Interpersonal communication skills to effectively communicate and collaborate with more senior peers, student employees, undergraduate and graduate researchers, as well as faculty
  • Ability to identify safety issues based on utilities associated with a piece of equipment or work area 
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 60 pounds occasionally 

Engineering Technician:

 

The Engineering Technician is a competent individual contributor who supports students and faculty to facilitate their industry and government sponsored research by building experimental rigs to evaluate new engineering concepts in thermal sciences and acoustics and vibration. This position works under direct supervision of the Technical Services Supervisor. The individual in this role may provide guidance to individuals in the Associate Engineering Technician role. This position seeks advice from more senior employees on design specifications and potential improvements, as well as on materials and instrumentation selection as required. This individual independently completes fabrication or assembly tasks related to research support and facility operations at Ray W. Herrick labs and associated facilities.
 

Required:

  •  Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology or related field
  •  One (1) year of experience in a specialty discipline (e.g., machinist, electrician, HVAC, pipefitting, sheet metal fabrication, and/or industrial  controls/instrumentation)
    •  Experience may include relevant internships, co-operative education, capstone courses, etc.
  • In lieu of a degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience
