Cancer Institute Senior Marketing Specialist

Job Summary

The Senior Marketing Specialist oversees marketing, communications (including outreach and internal relations) and branding efforts for the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research, including participating in the development and management of the organization’s website, mass email database and email marketing, social media presence, communication needs/efforts, and creation and placement of branded materials, including promotional items and logoed pieces. The primary goals for this position are to increase external and internal communications and visibility that will lead to enhanced recognition and opportunities of the Institute’s research mission, including philanthropic opportunities, recognition of the Institute’s accomplishments and capabilities, and opportunities for collaborations and strategic partnerships. 

 

The Senior Marketing Specialist will report to the Institute’s Managing Director and have a dotted line reporting relationship to the Senior Director of Research Marketing and Communications. The individual in this position will coordinate and streamline communication and marketing-related activities between central research marketing and communications and development teams. The individual will be a functional member of the Office of Research Communication (ORC) team, working closely with writers, visual and digital communicators, web developers, and other project managers, marketers, and administrators. The Senior Marketing Specialist will utilize the workflows, resources, and standards of the ORC to support their work and to enhance the outreach efforts of the Cancer Institute. Superior writing and editing skills are critical to success in this position. Finalists for this position will be asked to provide relevant writing samples.  
 

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, marketing, English, advertising, journalism, public relations or related field
  • Four (4) years of professional marketing and writing experience across mediums 
  • Work with a research, medical or science-oriented organization or technology company, following brand standards, and/or operating within identity guidelines 
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
  • Understanding of writing applications in traditional and emerging channels
  • Ability to streamline verbose content to focus main message in a concise, effective manner
  • Consistent quality control in work
  • Understanding of specific channels or vertical markets as required by job function
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt style of copy to various audiences, purposes, or media
  • Competency concepting and presenting creative work
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with external and internal constituents
  • Project management skills, including gathering input and building consensus
  • Ability to manage many projects concurrently and be able to adapt quickly to changing priorities
  • Experience with creating compelling messages for different target demographics
  • Solid problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficient expertise in MS Office and willingness to become proficient in other software and platforms
  • Proficient in AP Style
     

Preferred

  • External or in-house agency experience a plus
