Chemical Technician

The Chemical Technician in the Chemistry Undergraduate Preparations Laboratory supports the students, graduate instructors, staff and faculty enrolled in or teaching Chemistry undergraduate laboratory courses.  Prepare reagents, maintain instrumentation for the courses, and ensure its quality.  Play a role in communicating practices, procedures and policies and demonstrating techniques to the staff supervising and graduate students teaching the laboratory courses.  Work under limited supervision, adjust working methods as necessary, and develop solutions to problems independently.  This position frequently supervises undergraduate students employed in the Preparations Laboratory and is a full year 12-month appointment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology or related science
  • Knowledge of General, Organic and Analytical Chemistry, Algebra, Statistics and Calculus
  • Ability to routinely perform the following laboratory techniques: titrimetric analysis, spectroscopy, potentiometric analysis, gas chromatography, column chromatography, paper chromatography, HPLC, gravimetric analysis, qualitative analysis, thin layer chromatography, and statistical analysis
  • Must have a good understanding of chemical hygiene and personal safety
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form to a variety of audiences 
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques
  • Excellent problem solving skill under pressure
  • One or more years of wet laboratory experience
  • Strong background in analytical chemistry and the use of scientific instrumentation
  • Knowledge of database programs is helpful as is hands on experience with wireless instrumentation software such as Graphical Analysis, Spectral Analysis and Vernier sensor products
