Analytical Chemist

The Department of Agronomy is seeking an Analytical Chemist to perform chromatographic method development, data interpretation, and maintenance of gas and liquid chromatographic systems and associated detectors including triple quad mass spectrometry and time of flight spectroscopy with analyses involving complex environmental samples.  Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

 

  • Managing associated laboratory activities and writing up research results
  • Data processing and analyses of complex chromatograms, mass spectrometry, and interpretation of results
  • Analyzing complex environmental samples including soil, biosolids, various water sources, biota (wildlife and human samples) and multiple compounds including organic chemical-metal mixtures and particularly per and polyfluoroalkyl substances
  • Instrument maintenance and repair of primarily liquid and gas chromatographic systems and associated detectors
  • Managing ICP-MS recharge center including consulting to students/faculty, training, as well as monitoring budget, customer service and interactions with the business office regarding billings
  • Drafting reports and manuscripts
  • Co-authoring reports; author and coauthor manuscripts and posters
  • Facilitating interaction with DEEDs (data management system) and PURE (data depository at Purdue) for data checks and preservation, respectively
  • Ordering and tracking lab supplies including gas cylinders

 

Required:

  • Master's degree
  • 1 year of experience with chromatography and chromatographic systems including HPLC/MS/MS, HPLC/UV, GC/FID/ECD, ion chromatography, and ICP-OES analyses of complex samples of environmental relevance; method development; maintenance and data interpretation; working with students to facilitate research; and managing lab activities
  • Knowledge and skills in wet bench chemistry, chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques including mass spectrometry, supervising lab activities, facilitating student research, authoring/coauthoring publications
Preferred:
  • PhD in Chemistry or in an associated environmental science discipline
  • 2 years of related experience
  • Experience with analyzing per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
