Clinical Assistant Professor, Shelter Medicine

Job Summary

Purdue University, College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences invites applications from qualified individuals for a full-time (100%, 12 months) Clinical Assistant Professor position in Mobile Surgery/Shelter Medicine.


Qualifications for the position include a DVM or equivalent degree, the ability to practice as a licensed veterinarian in Indiana, and a minimum of two years’ experience with primary care small animal medicine and surgery.  Preference will be given to candidates with shelter medicine and surgery experience.  The successful candidate will be expected to obtain board certification in shelter medicine or a related discipline (such as the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners) within six years.

General Information

The Purdue University Veterinary Hospital is nearing completion of a major expansion project. Encompassing 162,500 square feet, the new David and Bonnie Brunner Purdue Veterinary Medical Hospital Complex will include three components located just east of the existing Lynn Hall of Veterinary Medicine:

  • The David and Bonnie Brunner Small Animal Hospital (adding 65,000 square feet to the existing small animal hospital facilities in Lynn Hall)
  •  The David and Bonnie Brunner Equine Hospital
  • The David and Bonnie Brunner Farm Animal Hospital

Scheduled to open in spring 2022, the new complex will provide better teaching facilities dedicated to educating the next generation of veterinary professionals, provide top quality compassionate animal health care, and serve as a catalyst for interdisciplinary clinical research.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will serve as one of two veterinarians operating on the mobile surgery unit (Priority4Paws).  Daily responsibilities will be to provide clinical instruction to students performing spay/neuter procedures (including pediatric spays/neuters) on shelter animals as well as providing instruction and consultation on shelter management and care of shelter animals. The successful candidate will represent Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine (PVM) in the community and build strong relationships with donors and animal shelter personnel. He/she should be willing to educate the public on responsible pet ownership (including spay and neuter philosophy), participate in professional organizations and community service, deliver continuing education programs, and other appropriate activities.  Participation in engagement activities, including committee work, is expected. Teaching responsibilities include clinical, didactic and laboratory instruction of DVM students, veterinary technician students, interns, and residents. The successful candidate will participate in securing external grants to support the shelter medicine program and will be encouraged to collaborate in clinical research projects to support the discovery activities of the PVM. The clinical commitment for this position is approximately 60-70%.
