Clinical Veterinarian, Laboratory Animal Program

Job Summary

The Clinical Veterinarian will provide veterinary care and program oversight at multiple campus facilities. In this role, you will collaborate with colleagues in monitoring Purdue University’s policies and procedures regarding the use of animals in teaching and research as well as ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and guidelines and accreditation standards. In addition, you will maintain frequent communication with animal facility personnel and assist in research, animal care staff and resident/student training, and review of animal research and teaching proposals.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide clinical veterinary care and/or oversight and support for a wide variety of species
  • Involved with direct animal care and decision making (physical exam, diagnosis, prescription, and treatment of animals) when serving as on-call clinical veterinarian
  • Assist with the preventative medicine program for a wide variety of species
  • Understand and apply the regulatory expectations for working with biomedical species, as stated in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act & Regulations
  • Maintain knowledge of current information and issues regarding laboratory animal medicine, care, and science
  • Conduct periodic animal facility rounds and consult on husbandry, care, and housing of animals
  • Serve as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and participate in associated activities
  • Identify and address compliance issues as assigned to include facility and programmatic evaluations
  • Thoroughly evaluate and review assigned animal use protocols and amendments, providing guidance and support to IACUC and principal investigators
  • Participate in site visits/consultations by external oversight organizations (AAALAC-International, USDA)
  • Consult with researchers and their staff and exchange knowledge regarding animal care support
  • Provide guidance and recommendations regarding questions or concerns in protocol development, selection of animal models, planning and conduct of procedures, troubleshooting, and regulatory compliance
  • Assist with special projects and other duties as necessary and assumed or assigned

Required:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited veterinary medicine program
  • 2 years of experience in clinical veterinary medicine
  • Current license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state with eligibility to practice in the State of Indiana
  • USDA accreditation, Category II
  • Team oriented with strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills essential, including the ability to work courteously with research and animal care staff
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, exercise judgment, and utilize problem solving skills
  • Ability to work  evening, weekend, and holiday clinical care
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license

Preferred:

  • ACLAM board certification or eligibility
  • Training and/or experience in laboratory animal medicine in an academic environment to include working knowledge of the diseases, conditions, and common problems affecting a broad cross section of animals in an academic environment
  • Working knowledge of laws, regulations, guidelines, and accreditation standards and ability to apply this knowledge towards assuring compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and Public Health Service standards
