Coastal Resilience Specialist

Job Summary

Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant and Purdue’s department of Forestry and Natural Resources is seeking a Coastal Resilience Specialist. In this role, you will develop a technical guidance, extension and applied research program related to physical coastal resilience along the southern Lake Michigan shoreline. Responsibilities will include:

 

  • Providing technical assistance and consultation for Lake Michigan coastal communities related to coastal resilience and engineering projects, with focus on human safety, infrastructure protection, erosion prevention and ecological benefits
  • Disseminating information through appropriate media (e.g., publications, social media, web-based, workshops, etc)
  • Conducting applied research to inform extension program; research should focus on coastal resilience and engineering projects, with consideration of human safety, infrastructure protection, erosion prevention and ecological benefits
  • Sharing results via presentations, reports and peer-reviewed publications
  • Collaborating with state and federal agencies, non-government organizations, university researchers and Sea Grant / Extension professionals in the execution of combined technical assistance, extension and applied research program
  • Seeking external funding to grow and support a combined technical assistance, extension and applied research program related to coastal resilience and engineering

What We're Looking For:

  • Masters’ degree in disciplines such as: coastal processes, earth sciences, environmental sciences, engineering (coastal, civil, environmental), or related field
  • 4 years’ experience with coastal resilience extension, engineering, research and/or technical support
  • Familiarity with coastal Great Lakes physical and biological processes
  • Strong communication skills
  • Familiarity with coastal engineering methods

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with acquiring and managing grant funds
