Content Development and Media Relations Specialist

Job Summary

Purdue’s Department of Agricultural Communications is seeking a communicator with a strong writing background to join our team. The Content Development and Media Relations Specialist works with faculty and staff colleagues to identify story ideas and develop them into multimedia web features, long-form articles, social media content and news releases. The ideal candidate enjoys working on a creative team, offering innovative ideas, and proactively cultivating relationships with faculty, staff and the media. Previous experience and professional interest in working with media is a required qualification.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Collaborate with content group, graphic designers, photographers and videographers to develop multimedia storytelling from concept to completion
  • Write and edit content, such as web stories, news releases, magazine articles and other material
  • Cultivate positive working relationships with on-campus clients to serve their communication needs and the University’s priorities
  • Manage media requests by determining appropriate, accurate response and appropriate college contacts for response
  • Develop and maintain relationships with media organizations and reporters/journalists to pitch news stories about the college to key news media at local, regional and national levels
  • Serve as AP Video contact between the college and university, identifying both evergreen and breaking news topics to cover and experts to be interviewed

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English or any discipline that has appropriately supplemented with internship and professional experience
  • 2 years of professional experience in a communications position
  • Experience working in media relations
  • Excellent written skills, verbal communication skills

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in strategic communications environment
  • Photography, videography, design knowledge
