Dairy Farm Manager

Job Summary

The Dairy Farm Manager will manage and coordinate Dairy Unit operations at the Animal Sciences Research and Education Center (ASREC) in support of research, teaching and extension efforts. Duties will include but are not limited to:


  • Operating all phases of the unit within Departmental, University, State, and Federal rules and regulations
  • Developing and managing unit budget in cooperation with the ASREC Coordinator
  • Coordinating research projects conducted at the unit and helping identify and determine facilities and animals to be used in experiments
  • Making recommendations and suggestions prior to research regarding animals, facilities or other variables needed to meet goals and to obtain results
  • Overseeing the life cycle care and management of dairy animals at the unit and making the determination and adjustments in management and care of animals when necessary
  • Following protocols, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintaining records pertaining to the proper care and use of dairy animals at the unit
  • Overseeing animal health and seek veterinary assistance as appropriate
  • Maintaining monthly animal inventory records
  • Hiring, assure training, assigning work, conducting evaluations, disciplining and terminating employees
  • Coordinating/overseeing training activities on safety, including proper procedures for handling dairy animals
  • Developing long-range plans and short-term goals for the unit and individual employees
  • Instructing/aiding in the instruction of classes and labs, assist with Extension efforts, and conduct tours of the Dairy Unit for various groups
  • Overseeing the maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment and modifying/designing animal equipment for research and better overall efficiency of operations
  • Effectively managing emergencies such as power failure, equipment failure or malfunction, weather related emergencies, sudden onset of animal disease, or worker injury
  • Serving as Building Deputy of the unit facilities


  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences or a related field
  • 4 years' experience working in commercial or research dairy operation, managing a commercial or research operation or other related experience
  • In lieu of degree consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (Associate's degree + 6 years of related experience)
  • Computer skills
  • Some travel
  • Valid U.S or Canadian driver's license



  • Knowledge of all phases of dairy production including nutrition, genetics, artificial insemination, and herd health
