Data Science Instructional Specialist

Job Summary

Purdue University and The Data Mine team are looking for a candidate with experience in business development, partnership development, and other collaborative efforts to become its next Data Science Instructional Specialist. The Instruction Specialist (IS) position will coordinate with The Data Mine Managing Director for Academic Programs and Outreach (MDAP&O) and with the Director of The Data Mine to provide the educational materials and support for T.A.s, students, and The Data Mine staff throughout The Data Mine organization including the weekly seminars.  The IS must be a fully competent and productive professional contributor within the data science domain, working within platforms like Brightspace, Piazza, GitHub, and Gradescope to name a few.  The IS will be expected to set objectives and work independently on large, moderately complex projects or assignments under the general supervision of the MDAP&O. The IS may encounter technical problems on a wide range of issues which are typically solved through prior experience and analysis of the issues. 

 

The Instruction Specialist will be responsible for minor changes in data systems; will be relied upon heavily in the development of projects and curriculum;  must have the ability to solve problems and/or improve the effectiveness of the learning process within The Data Mine;  will be expected to communicate with parties inside and outside of The Data Mine organization to influence others regarding facts, policies, and practices;  may provide guidance and assistance to entry-level professionals or support other Data Mine employees;  will be required to demonstrate practical knowledge of Data Science to apply fundamental concepts typically obtained through advanced education and experience.

 

What is needed:

  • B.S. in Applied Statistics, Data Science, or Computer Science. 
  • Two years of data science experience  
  • Experience obtained through internships will be considered
  • Proficiency with R, Python, Unix, SQL, Jupyter Notebooks, R Markdown, and XML preferred.  
  • Lesson planning for a variety of levels of the student experience 
  • Effective online communication
