Database Engineer

Job Summary

The Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP) at Purdue University facilitates collaboration between the Indiana Department of Transportation, higher education institutions and industry to implement innovations that result in continuous improvement in the planning, design, construction, operation, management and economic efficiency of the Indiana transportation infrastructure. The ideal candidate will develop, test, maintain, and document database systems upwards of one trillion records that support transportation engineering research and implementation. The scope of the research includes, but is not limited to database and software systems relating to traffic signal and freeway management, operations, and control devices, passenger and freight mobility, infrastructure asset management and tracking, connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV), electric vehicles (EV), internet-of-things (IoT), micro-mobility and smart cities.


The database systems developed will enable new technologies and methods to be adopted safely, effectively, and efficiently by transportation agencies, local municipalities, and the private sector. Some field work is required for data collection including the setup, operation, and maintenance of instruments, sensors and equipment. Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology or related field
  • Two (2) years of professional database and software development experience utilizing SQL
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted (e.g., an Associate's degree with 4 years of experience, or a High School Diploma/GED with 6 years of experience)
  • Skilled in developing, testing, and/or maintaining Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS)
  • Knowledge of SQL and database protocols  
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

 

Preferred:

  • Experience with cloud computing, big data, web development, geographic information systems (GIS), Internet-of-Things (IoT), networking, system administration, hardware deployment, mobile devices, embedded computers, computing clusters
  • Experience working on transportation-related projects
  • Field experience
  • Management of big data systems. SQL Server. PostgreSQL. MySQL. BigQuery. Cassandra. Networking protocols. System backups and services. Cloud computing. Shell scripting and command-line-based operating systems. Embedded devices. UNIX/LINUX systems. MQTT services. Apache Kafka. Google Cloud Platform or Amazon Web Services. Google Dataflow. ArcGIS or ArcMap

 

Additional Information:

  • This position has a limited duration of two (2) years with continuation dependent upon additional grant funding. Benefits do apply
