Department Head - Nutrition Science

Purdue University is seeking nominations and applications for Head, Department of Nutrition Science (NUTR). This role requires a strong commitment across each of the land-grant missions of the department: research, teaching, engagement, and service. The Head will be an internationally-recognized academic scholar who will provide leadership and vision, and will facilitate the breadth of departmental research, scholarship, and educational activities.

About the College

The College of Health and Human Sciences (HHS), home to the Department of NUTR, is the newest and 2nd largest college at Purdue with extensive interconnections within and beyond the College (http://www.purdue.edu/hhs/). The College brings together scholars in the health sciences and human sciences to strategically address issues vital to enhancing people’s health and quality of life. HHS’ multidisciplinary learning environment uniquely prepares students to contribute to improved human health and behavior and to serve as leaders in their disciplines. About the Department

The overall mission of the Department of NUTR (https://www.purdue.edu/hhs/nutr/) is to conduct the highest caliber nutrition science research, to educate students in a diverse and inclusive environment, and to promote health through engagement with the public. The department is committed to providing exceptional undergraduate and graduate education and currently has approximately 250 undergraduate students in multiple majors and 45 graduate students. The Department’s Didactic and Coordinated Programs in Nutrition and Dietetics are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

The Department of NUTR has more than 20 full-time tenured, tenure-track, clinical and lecturer faculty members. NUTR is recognized nationally and internationally for research in the areas of Metabolism and Obesity; Minerals, Vitamin D and Bone Health; Food, Ingestive Behavior, and Population Nutrition; and Carcinogenesis and Cancer Prevention.  NUTR has a strong record in promoting interdisciplinary research and leadership across and beyond the campus. This includes leadership and involvement in the NIH-supported Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (https://indianactsi.org/), the Ingestive Behavior Research Center (https://www.purdue.edu/discoverypark/ibrc/), NCI-designated Purdue Center for Cancer Research (https://www.cancerresearch.purdue.edu/), the Women’s Global Health Institute (https://www.purdue.edu/discoverypark/WGHI/), Center on Aging and the Life Course (https://www.purdue.edu/aging/), and the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Requirements and Application Instructions

Applicants should have scholarly credentials commensurate with the rank of Tenured Full Professor, including a Ph.D. in a relevant field. Field of specialization is open. Desirable attributes include a strong record of collaborative, impactful research and funding as well as experience in academic administration, teaching and education. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a commitment to the professional development and advancement of faculty, staff, and students. The Head is responsible for the fiscal management of the department, personnel issues, faculty/staff development, alumni relations, and advocacy for the Department to the College, University, and larger community. The successful candidate will be someone with excellent communication skills who values and promotes diversity and inclusion. The position is located on the Purdue University main campus and will be a full-time, 12-month, tenured position.
