Job Summary
Supervise the Brees Center learning specialist and tutor/mentor coordinator. Responsible for working with the Sr. Associate Athletics Director for Student Services in providing leadership and direction for the athletics academic support services unit. Serve as academic advisor to the student-athletes in specific sports as assigned by the senior associate athletics director. Work with the various sports with recruiting of prospective student-athletes as needed.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Supervise and direct Brees Center learning specialist and Tutor/Mentor Coordinator. Responsibilities to include:
- Provide leadership, direction, training, and orientation, to Brees Center learning specialist and tutor/mentor coordinator with emphasis on departmental procedures, Purdue University, Big Ten Conference and NCAA policies.
- Assist each with establishing yearly performance expectations. Manage annual performance expectations of employees, using corrective action as necessary.
- Meet weekly to discuss any questions or concerns.
- Provide opportunities for meaningful experiences related to the athletic academic advising profession, as well as possible outside professional development opportunities.
- Coordinate work to be accomplished with other athletic academic support services staff to assure smooth and timely results.
- Conduct searches when positions become available.
- Coordinate orientation upon their arrival.
- In coordination with the senior associate athletics director for student services, develop and manage the athletics academic support services 3-Year Planning document and conduct the accompanying meeting at the conclusion of each semester. This document provides the overall direction of the unit.
- Develop an academic program of study for select student-athletes, which will allow the student-athletes to maintain eligibility status. Monitor the academic performance of select student-athletes, including attendance and grade checks, projection of grades, and eligibility status. Review and determine certification and continuing eligibility of student-athletes. Responsible for monitoring course registration and scheduling for student-athletes, including maintenance of class schedules and bookstore requests. Communicate with coaches, and student-athletes in regards to dates and times for book handouts and returns.
- Represent Purdue University and the Academic Services unit at campus Head Advisor meetings and Big Ten Director’s meetings. Facilitate communication between athletic academic support services staff and campus student services offices in order to advocate for student-athletes needs as appropriate.
- Assist Faculty Athletic Representatives working group and conference officials to review pending, upcoming or needed conference and NCAA legislation. Responsible for articulating perceived intended and unintended impact that pending legislation might have on both student-athletes and athletic academic support staff.
- Responsible for managing complex integrated data sets in web-based environments and generating reports from that data using Microsoft Access, Cognos, and Xtender programs as necessary. Compile reports as required by the Big Ten Conference, NCAA, Athletics Director, Athletic Affairs Committee, and the Sr. Associate Athletics Director for Student Services.
- Maintain knowledge regarding state and federal tax regulations regarding internationals student-athletes; coordinate with campus accounting staff in the identification and monitoring of those student and their compliance with state and federal tax laws; assist international student-athletes in identifying their tax obligations and assist with completion of requisite paperwork and forms. Provide career and personal counseling, orientation and personal development programs to student-athletes.
- Participate with on-campus recruiting. Meet with student-athlete prospects and parents to review athletic academic services and facilities. Facilitate on-campus meetings with appropriate academic school representatives.
- Other duties as assigned by the Sr. Associate Athletics Director for Student Services.

What We're Looking For:
Education and Experience:
- Master's degree in related area
- Five (5) years’ experience required, preferably in sports administration, academic advising, related student services, or education
- An equivalent combination of education and related experience may also be considered
Skills needed:
- Ability to plan and organize work; organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; verbal and written communications skills; ability to read, interpret, instruct, and effectively communicate complex rules and regulations.
- Ability to meet established deadlines, ability to effectively communicate with coaches, administrators, student-athletes, parents, faculty and staff; personal computer skills including related database, word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Ability to analyze, interpret, communicate, and adhere to University, Big Ten Conference, and NCAA policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
