Director of External Relations

Job Summary

The Director of External Relations, as part of the senior leadership team, will create and execute strategies to engage, communicate and build collaborative partnerships with constituents served through the Vice Provost of Student Life’s office. The position plays a critical role in supporting the Vice Provost through the crafting of messaging, managing various advisory councils and boards and providing guidance to the leadership team within OVPSL. The Director will also serve as the lead for the Parent and Family Connections department by providing strategic direction and oversight of the staff. In addition, this position will have oversight of the University Call Center operation and communication both internal and external stakeholders and callers.


  • Master’s Degree in communication, marketing, or related field.
  • Six years of progressive experience in marketing, communication, public relations, or applicable role.
  • In lieu of a degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience (Bachelor’s Degree + 8 years of experience, Associate’s Degree + 10 years of experience, or High School Diploma/GED + 12 years of experience).
  • Highly motivated with strong relationship building skills, self-motivation and demonstrated capacity for leadership.
  • Organization, leadership, and teamwork skills are crucial.
  • Strong communication and listening skills. 
  • Ability to represent the University with diplomacy at all levels.
  • Strong ability to build rapport.
  • Excellence presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms, web content management and digital communications.
  • Strong ability to meet manage multiple projects with tight deadlines with a high degree of accuracy in an extremely fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from different viewpoints and backgrounds utilizing the SLISU principles daily.
  • Development and Stewardship skills
