Job Summary

The Director of Nursing is responsible for the planning, organization, staffing, and overall leadership of the Nursing Services department to ensure high-quality patient care in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and nursing standards. This position develops and implements strategic plans, supervises nursing staff, and manages the creation and execution of accreditation-aligned policies that promote patient comfort and well-being.

 

The role oversees nursing care in multiple service areas, including the Medical Clinic, Women’s Clinic, Sports Medicine Clinic, Allergy and Immunization Clinic, Triage, Extended Care Area, and Central Supply. The Director makes key decisions regarding recruitment, hiring, performance management, and terminations for nursing personnel.

 

Operating within a quad leadership model—alongside the Senior Director, Medical Director, and Business Services Manager—the Director ensures efficient clinical operations, optimal staffing models, and continual process improvement. The position leads the development and evaluation of patient-focused nursing programs, approves continuing education for licensed and clinical support staff, coordinates peer review and quality improvement projects, and updates nursing policies and procedures.

 

The Director collaborates with leadership committees to enhance patient satisfaction, clinical quality, and operational effectiveness, particularly during times of crisis or organizational change. This role also serves as the primary liaison for nursing services with internal and external stakeholders and maintains compliance with ACHA recommendations and AAAHC standards.

What We're Looking For

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited institution. 
  • Current State licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Indiana and/or Compact State Licensure.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of nursing practice experience; with 3 years of nursing supervisory experience and a minimum of 3 years working in an outpatient clinic setting
  • Experience with employee recruiting, scheduling, and staffing, and management of disciplinary issues.

 

Preferred:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree from an accredited institution. 
  • Experience with ambulatory patient care /college health experience.
  • Knowledge of human resource laws and best practices
  • Knowledge of electronic health records systems

 

Skills:

Required:

 

  • Thorough knowledge of the scientific principles of general nursing theory and practice and the ability to apply them to optimize patient care.
  • Ability to supervise and schedule nursing staff in a medical facility.
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills
  • Ability to handle urgent or emergencies professionally and timely.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative team environment.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Required skills include attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent organizational skills and leadership abilities.
  • Ability to provide operational and educational guidance to all PUSH staff.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement principles
  • Experience in project management, and departmental leadership.
  • Experience with IT communications (Purdue computing environment systems experience, Electronic Health Records, and auditing) including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations concerning infectious diseases and emerging public health concerns
  • Analytical reasoning to interpret and act on quality initiative data.
  • Participate in committee work (Health Center and University-wide) as appropriate.
  • Ability to perform complex tasks independently with minimal supervision.
