Egg Inspector - (Northeastern Indiana Counties)

Job Summary

The Egg Inspector will be responsible for inspection activities in a 21 county area in Northeastern Indiana. This position will conduct retail egg inspections, wholesale egg inspections, Shell Egg producer inspections for USDA Shell Egg Surveillance program, USDA Country of Origin Labeling audits and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shell egg inspections under 21 CFR 118. Additional responsibilities will include but are not limited to:


  • Reviewing SE Prevention Plans, reviewing supporting records to assure compliance with the Egg Rule, and preparing and/or reviewing of comprehensive reports for submission to FDA
  • Performing inspections at retail, wholesale and food service establishments to assure quality and wholesomeness of eggs distributed in Indiana
  • Verifying packaging is properly labeled, eggs meet quality standards, and that the product is being maintained in an environment that promotes a safe product to the consumer
  • Performing Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) Inspections at retail locations throughout Indiana
  • Reviewing packaging and labeling for requirements mandated by Federal law, preparing a final report of findings, communicating findings with retail management, and transmitting the information to the appropriate regulatory agency
  • Conducting shell egg surveillance inspection of USDA registered egg production facilities and hatchery operations as designated by the USDA/AMS under the Egg Products Inspection Act
  • Evaluating shell eggs to verify quality and confirm appropriate environmental control
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1 year experience in retail food industry or food production
  • In lieu of degree consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (Associate's degree + 3 years of related experience; HS diploma/GED + 5 years of related experience)
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain certification to conduct COOL audits per USDA/AMS (Agricultural Marketing Service)
  • COOL program requirements and Shell Egg Grader and Surveillance certification through the USDA/AMS Poultry programs
  • FDA sponsored training for Egg Rule inspections
  • A good understanding of the retailed food industry, including the production and distribution of shell eggs
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation procedures
  • Ability to establish own work schedule and be self-motivated to complete a level of work expected of the position
  • Ability to conduct an inspection in a professional manner and record and submit findings to the appropriate agency
  • Ability to understand and interpret laws and regulations pertaining to the inspection being conducted
  • Ability to pass a Office of Personnel Management (OPM) background screening and obtain/maintain FDA credentials and commission
  • Basic computer operation, organizational, time management, and communication/conflict resolution skills
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license



  • Experience in food or shell egg inspection
  • Knowledge of shell egg grades and labeling
