As part of our Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) team, the Associate Environmental Safety Technician will gain valuable experience in hazardous materials management while supporting the university’s world-class teaching and research mission. What You’ll Do
- Assist EHS staff who specialize in hazardous materials management
- Obtain and maintain certifications in Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods shipping
- Learn and assist in preparing, packaging, labeling, and documenting Dangerous Goods (DG), dry ice, and exempt shipments
- Support inspections to verify compliance with university policies, carrier requirements, DOT, IATA, and other regulations
- Generate and maintain shipment documentation, tracking records, and invoices
- Coordinate outgoing shipments and assist in communication with carriers
- Gain experience in packaging, labeling, and preparing documentation under supervision of experienced staff
- Provide administrative support to the Hazardous Materials Management group, including processing invoices for construction safety, abatement, and remediation projects

What We're Looking For
Education and Experience Required:
- Requires a High School Degree or High School Equivalency (HSE)
- Valid driver's license required
Preferred:
- College chemistry course work
Skills Needed:
- A strong commitment to customer service and the Administrative Operations strategic goals is essential
- Basic computer skills and Microsoft Office experience is required
- May involve exposure to extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, close spaces and lifting requirements over 40 pounds
- Must:
- have strong work organization skills. Good written and verbal communication skills required
- be able to wear personal protective equipment
- pass an initial and annual basic medical exam
- be able to lift and carry 10-25 pounds frequently and 40+ pounds occasionally
- conform to applicable regulatory and safety requirements
- have the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and have mutual trust and respect with others
- have high ethical and professional behavior standards
- comply with Purdue's driving policy
