Environmental Safety Technician-Haz Mat
Job Summary
As the Environmental Technician you will serve as Environmental Technician, in support of staff members in Radiological and Environmental Management who specialize in hazardous materials management. You will collect and process chemical and biological waste. This position will perform proper inspection of waste prior to pick-up and ensure compliance with University policy, State and Federal waste regulations, permit conditions and Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements. Identify incompatible chemicals. You will generate and maintain manifest documentation. Process chemical waste. You will blend, treat, package and label hazardous materials under moderate supervision of chemist. Follow standard operating procedures. the Environmental Technician will efficiently perform routine waste facility inspections for safety and compliance with University policy, State and Federal waste regulation, and permit conditions You will respond to chemical spills, accidents and emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
This position will be part of a group that is key to supporting safety and environmental protection for Purdue’s students, researchers and staff. This is a dual posting at either an S1 or S2. The Hiring Manager will determine the level at the time of hire.
What We're Looking For:
Education and Experience:
- High School Degree or GED
- No experience needed but college chemistry course work is preferred
- Valid driver's license required
To be considered for the S2 position you will need the above plus the following:
- Three (3) years of previous experience working with hazardous materials are required or three years of experience in a similar position in industry, government or academia may also be considered
Skills needed:
- Good written and verbal communication skills required
- Must:
- have strong work organization skills
- be able to wear personal protective equipment including a respirator
- pass an initial and annual basic medical exam
- be able to lift and carry 50 to 80 lbs. frequently, and up to 100 + pounds occasionally
- conform to applicable regulatory and safety requirements
- have the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and have mutual trust and respect with others
- have high ethical and professional behavior standards
- comply with Purdue's driving policy
- A strong commitment to customer service and the Administrative Operations strategic goals is essential
- Basic computer skills and Microsoft Office experience is required
- May involve exposure to extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, close spaces and lifting requirements over 100 pounds
