Environmental Technician - Radiological & Environmental Management

Job Summary

The successful Environmental Technician while under the leadership of the crew chief or skilled crew member, train to perform removal, enclosure, encapsulation, and/or other methods of eliminating and controlling hazardous material or hazardous environmental conditions including asbestos and lead.  Must follow IOSHA, EPA, and IDEM regulations.  Respond on 24-hour basis to chemical spills, accidents, and emergencies.  May involve exposure to heights, extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, close spaces and lifting heavy objects.


  • High school diploma/GED
  • Must successfully pass an accredited asbestos worker exam every year to conform with Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration (IOSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) regulations
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have good work organization skills and the ability to create and maintain accurate records
  • Basic mathematical calculation skills    
  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolds up to 80 feet and work in tight spaces
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 to 80 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally
  • Ability to wear a tight fitting respirator; must pass a yearly physical examination
  • A valid US or Canadian drivers’ license  


  • Experience in general construction or carpentry
  • Experience performing environmental abatement including asbestos and lead removal and disposal according to EPA standards
  • Previous experience insulating and repairing standard pipes and boilers
  • Knowledge of the terminology, functions and operating procedures of negative air pressure units, high pressure units, high pressure sprayers and various hand and power tools and equipment
