Job Summary

Purdue University and its Intercollegiate Athletics Department are looking for an entry-level groundskeeper at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The candidate must have the ability to build relationships and work among a diverse workforce at all levels. As a golf course groundskeeper, you will perform all general golf turf maintenance operations including mowing, bunker maintenance, hand-trimming, aeration, top-dressing and seeding of new and existing turf.  You will become familiar with the operation of all golf turf maintenance equipment and perform general equipment repair.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Perform a variety of golf course maintenance duties including mowing, blowing, fertilization, aeration, grooming, seeding, topdressing, chemical applications, edging, painting, and irrigation
  • Work with golf maintenance staff in the preparation and maintenance of golf courses for practices, events, and competitions, in accordance with NCAA and Big Ten rules
  • Work with golf maintenance staff as well as student/temporary staff to handle routine and non-routine maintenance issues as they arise.
  • Make recommendations based on course conditions and implement changes as needed.
  • Operation of heavy equipment, such as tractors, skid steer loaders, and forklifts
  • Adhere to routine deadlines
  • Assist in student/temporary employee training and supervision
  • Routine interactions with coaches, administrators, and event staff
  • Snow and ice removal for golf facilities
  • Perform general equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Participate in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, correspondence courses, and trade shows
  • Perform other duties, as assigned

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in a golf course maintenance/grounds position or other relevant golf course experience.

 

Skills needed:

  • The ability to communicate and adhere to University, Big Ten Conference, and NCAA policies, procedures, rules, and regulations is necessary
  • Excellent professionalism in dealing with golf patrons, administrators, coaches and student-athletes
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Motivated individual with the ability to efficiently multi-task, work under pressure, and handle interruptions
  • Competencies in judgment, dependability, accountability, integrity, flexibility, and problem-solving
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. and occasionally up to 100 lbs
  • Some weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • MODERATE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Lift and carry 25 to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 60 lbs. occasionally.
