Hazardous Material Manager - Radiological and Environment Management

Job Summary

Responsible for the hazardous waste program and related personnel activities for the Hazardous Materials Management section of the Radiological and Environmental Management Department in compliance with state and federal regulations governing hazardous waste activities. Provide hazardous waste consultation for all regional campuses to ensure compliance and safe practices. Perform or coordinate all necessary functions associated with hazardous waste management including transportation, storage, treatment, training, and documentation. Develop and ensure implementation of standard operating and emergency response policies, procedures and methods for proper disposition of hazardous materials.  Oversee environmental remediation and cleanup projects.  Serve as backup to the Director of Regulatory Compliance. Implement the campus-wide Integrated Safety Plan.  Provide 24-hour response for hazardous material related incidents for all of the associated campuses.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental field, or related field 
  • Five years of work experience in a hazardous waste program or environmental area
  • Knowledge in a Treatment, Storage, and Disposal (TSD) Facility 
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources
  • Knowledge of applicable 29 CFR, 40 CFR, and 49 CFR (federal regulations) 
  • Knowledge of hazardous waste chemistry
  • Knowledge of chemical handling precautions and chemical spill/incident countermeasures
  • Ability to communicate and negotiate, both written and verbally, with University administrators, government agencies, public officials, and community representatives
  • Ability to work independently and organize and implement multiple tasks and plans
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and evaluate problem situations and recommend corrective actions
  • Must have the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships, mutual trust and respect with others
  • Must have high ethical and professional behavior standards
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • A strong commitment to customer service and the Administrative Operations Strategic Goals is essential
  • Strong computer skills and Microsoft Office experience
  • A valid US or Canadian driver's license


  • Master's degree and/or eligibility for certification by a nationally recognized organization (CHMM, CIH, CSP, CHP, PE)
  • Two years’ experience in a university setting 
  • Experience managing a budget
  • Experience managing, writing, and modifying a Part B RCRA permit
  • Supervisory experience
