Job Summary
What You'll Be Doing:
As a Heating & Cooling Mechanic for the Operations and Maintenance Dept., you will:
- Perform installation, preventative maintenance trouble shooting and repair of all associated refrigeration and heating/cooling equipment such as, but not limited to; gas and oil fired boilers, furnaces, stoves, ovens, incinerators ,air conditioners, water coolers, refrigerators, freezers, cryostats and other temperature-controlled units, ice-makers, and all other types of refrigeration units, etc.
- Perform regular preventative maintenance, refrigerant record keeping in accordance with EPA standards and Indiana Code.
- Read blueprints, schematics, manufacturer instructions and guidelines.
- Position is subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies, fire, and vandalism and after hours pager rotation.
- Overtime, scheduled or unscheduled may be required to accomplish tasks.
- May require working in adverse weather conditions, confined spaces and heights.
- Must adhere to Purdue University safety policies, procedures and training.

What We Are Looking For
Note: This position represents a dual-level posting and will be filled as an Associate Heating & Cooling Mechanic (SK1) or a Heating and Cooling Mechanic (SK2). The hiring manager will determine the job level based on the skills, experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate.
Associate Heating & Cooling Mechanic (SK1):
Required:
- High school diploma/GED
Helpful:
- Strong oral and written communication skills required.
- Mathematical calculation skills necessary.
- Computer skills/familiarity with word processor and spreadsheets required.
- Able to utilize electronic procurement system.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 to 80 lbs. frequently, and up to 100 lbs. or more occasionally required.
- Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolds and work from height up to 100 feet.
- Ability to work under a variety of conditions, such as confined space (tunnels, pits), heights and hot/cold conditions.
- Required to work outdoors 30% of the time in temperatures below 32 degrees and above 90 degrees.
- Valid driver's License required.
Heating & Cooling Mechanic (SK2):
Required:
- High school diploma/GED
- Three years of experience with Heating and Cooling equipment.
Helpful:
- SK1 skills plus:
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics and manufacturer instructions and guidelines
- Industrial, commercial and/or residential heating and cooling and refrigeration experience
