Senior Instrument Controls Engineer

The Senior Instrument Controls Engineer will be an integral part of the Indiana Manufacturing Competitiveness Center (IN-MaC) support team responsible for developing, fostering and managing manufacturing Testbed operations at the Indiana Manufacturing Institute. The Testbed addresses industry’s digital integration barriers across the production floor and enterprise to accelerate the transformation of digital, smart manufacturing tools and methods (Industry 4.0) through research, demonstration and knowledge transfer. The Testbed features physical manufacturing processes that are digitally interconnected into a robust, reliable and replicable industrial Internet of Things (IoT) framework. The IoT framework will unleash new levels of information and actionable insight for manufacturers to realize heightened levels of quality, efficiency, flexibility and profitability across their shop floors, enterprise and supply networks.


The Instrument Controls Engineer will apply technical skills to operationalize the Testbed information network including hardware, software, applications and systems that result in a stable, robust, digitally integrated facility. Core responsibilities are to:

  • define requirements, establish and maintain systems and hardware to generate and present operational data across an Internet of Things (IoT) platform for production tracking, performance optimization and analysis
  • develop and execute planned adaptations to automated system and machine controls (computer, PLC/PID)
  • identify machine level and production automation hardware and software systems and devise plans to adopt and integrate systems that advance the Testbed vision
  • design and build IT/OT interfaces for integration of both legacy and advanced manufacturing equipment into the Testbed information infrastructure
  • support development of software interfaces as between manufacturing machines and data repositories (computer, cloud-based) for advanced analytics
  • identify, source, and implement network hardware for connecting machines and machine sensors to the IoT framework
  • coordinate, plan, and conduct testing and analysis to assure system integrity
  • interface with IMI staff, Purdue faculty, and external companies to set-up and operate automated manufacturing cells
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Four (4) years of professional experience
  • Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience
  • Demonstrated competency in common industry program languages (e.g. G code, M code, SmartCamm, Esprit, ladder logic) to write programming code, install, test and debug interfaces
  • Experience troubleshooting hardware and peripheral issues
  • Working knowledge of cyber network architecture, hardware and programming in a lab, factory or commercial setting
  • Working knowledge of industry peripheral platforms (e.g. Raspberry Pi, Arduino), their connectivity and security
  • Knowledge of industrial control logic, IoT coding and embedded device networks (e.g. PLC/PID (functional block diagrams, ladder logic), MATLAB, LabVIEW, Z-wave, MQTT, Zigbee, TCP/IP stack, HTTP)
  • Knowledge of industrial control and protocol for networking and data acquisition of PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) to SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) (e.g. Rs232, Rs 485, HART, Profibus, Canbus, Profinet, DP/PA, Ethernet, Modbus) and HMI (Human Machine Interfaces)
  • Broad knowledge of electrical instrumentation and devices
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting experience of motors, instruments, or machines
  • Experience with installation and maintenance of process automation devices for data acquisition and monitoring (e.g. real-time and on-line)
  • Operating systems programming experience (e.g. C/C++/C#, Linux, UNIX, Rust)
  • Demonstrated experience with Application development languages (e.g. HTML5, C/C++/C#, Python, Java/JavaScript, Swift, pySerial)
  • Demonstrated project development and project management successes
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical users
  • Strong collaboration skills to effectively partner with clients to uncover and resolve commercial data integration challenges
  • Ability to lift and carry 10 to 25 pounds frequently and 40 pounds occasionally

  • Integrated production systems experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to design, test and debug applications on MTConnect (open-source) platform
  • Experience with additive manufacturing technologies, subtractive machining, injection molding, final assembly and inspection
  • Knowledge of robot languages (e.g. krc2 (KUKA), krl (Fanuc)) and HMI code (e.g Visual Basic (VB))
  • Design and commissioning experience of automation interfacing hardware including actuator assemblies, machine interfaces and robot end effectors
  • Experience in Internet-of-Things (IOT) applied to manufacturing environments
  • Alternating Current Variable Speed Frequency Drives (VFD) with motors commissioning and process maintenance experience
  • Design and management of wireless networks and systems
  • Higher education outreach and engagement experience
