Purdue University’s Amy Facility is seeking a skilled Instrumentation Technician to join our dynamic team. In this pivotal role, you will collaborate with electrical engineering and scientific staff to design, fabricate, and repair custom scientific equipment and instrumentation—solutions that often can’t be found on the commercial market. Your expertise will ensure our research teams have the tools they need to push boundaries and achieve excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Support design, fabrication, and repair of unique scientific equipment and instrumentation
- Troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate a wide range of electronic and electromechanical devices
- Recommend and procure electronic and mechanical components for new construction, test fixtures, repairs, and facility stock
- Collaborate closely with engineering and scientific staff to deliver practical, high-quality solutions

About Us
Purdue University’s Amy Instrumentation Facility is a collaborative, innovation-driven environment supporting faculty and student research through the development of custom scientific instrumentation and methodologies. We specialize in creating advanced, non-commercial hardware and software to meet unique research and educational needs.
What We're Looking For
Education and Experience Needed:
- High School Degree or High School Equivalency
- Minimum four (4) years of experience with electronics fabrication/repair required
Preferred:
- Associate's degree in electronics or closely related field with experience servicing scientific apparatus
Skills Needed:
- Knowledge and skill in the use of electronic test equipment, soldering irons, hand tools, power tools, wiring and assembly
Demonstrate:- a proactive approach to learning new skills and technologies
- proficiency in circuit board assembly techniques
- proficiency in electronic chassis design and fabrication
- Strong organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to details Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to
- influence and build work relationships among a diverse workforce.
- General computer proficiency in the use of productivity software and software specific to PCB design / layout.
- Ability to
- troubleshoot and repair electronic devices and instruments at the component level
- read and generate electronic schematics and mechanical drawings
- work both independently and in a team environment
- identify and determine problems, analyze information, and implement solutions
- lift and carry 10-25 pounds frequently and 40 pounds occasionally
- Motivated individual with ability to efficiently multitask, work under pressure, handle interruptions, and meet deadlines
- Capable of taking initiative, assuming responsibility and handling confidential information with discretion
Preferred:
- Familiarity with scientific / medical instrumentation
- Skilled in the use of precision machining equipment, programming or system administrative skills
