Lab Technician

Job Summary

The Wang Lab is seeking to hire an exceptionally organized individual to assist in the daily management of the laboratory (which includes activities in the wet lab, greenhouse, and field). Research in this group relies on physiological measurements of crop plants grown under controlled environments and field settings in addition to some wet lab approaches. The ideal candidate will have an interest in response of plants to the environment. Duties will include but are not limited to:


  • Maintain lab organization: with limited supervision, cleans and organizes lab/greenhouse spaces, helps set up/maintain experiments, orders lab supplies and materials, tests and maintains instruments, including contacting vendors as needed for repair
  • Maintains compliance with REM
  • Participate in on-going experiments as needed in the lab, greenhouse, and field
  • Lab: Carry out assays following protocols that have been established as well as those under development
  • Independently assists graduate students in making plant measurements during phenotyping campaigns, manage plant care in greenhouse experiments, and collect samples from experiments in the greenhouse and/or field
  • Test alternative protocols and provide feedback to PI to determine the best option
  • Under PI guidance, write standard protocols for procedures under development, keep notes of field and greenhouse activities during experiments
  • Train and supervise students to assist with activities (e.g., data collection, use of instruments, cleaning)
  • Approve hours for undergraduate students
  • Liaise with partners as needed for projects (e.g., coordinate shipments to other institutions, schedule field activities with collaborating Purdue labs and centers [ACRE, PACs, etc])


  • Bachelor's degree in biology, plant science, ecology, natural resources or related field
  • 2 years’ experience working in a lab setting with plants
  • Due to the varied nature of responsibilities, strong organization is key to success in this position
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory work such as proper safety precautions, preparing chemical solutions, pipetting, use of analytical balances, capacity to learn the operation of plant physiology instruments
  • Microsoft Excel skills to record data, and use of Microsoft Word to write reports
  • Ability to work independently and as well as part of a team is critical



  • Prior experience using plant physiological instruments
