Laboratory Technician (Bacteriology)

Job Summary

Serve as clinical microbiology laboratory technician.  Perform routine or specialized diagnostic procedures/tests for identification of microbial pathogens of animals and analyze data in support of diagnostic and research missions of the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.  Participates in section and laboratory wide team environment to problem-solve, distribute information and work toward continual process improvement. Performing PCR tests for human COVID-19 may be required.

    
Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science related field (Veterinary nursing degrees may also be considered)
  • 6 months of laboratory experience  
  • Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (Associate’s degree and 2.5 years of relevant work experience)
  • Knowledge of microbiological procedures, sterile technique, calculation/concentration determination, and equipment   
  • Ability to interpret results
  • Ability to recognize and identify problems
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, computer, word processing, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work individually and in a team environment    

 

Preferred:

  • Supervisory skills
  • Degree in biology or animal sciences  
  • Course work that includes at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 hours of science courses that include 6 semesters hours of chemistry or 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination
