Laboratory Technician (Virology/Serology)

Job Summary

The Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) is recruiting highly motivated candidates to serve as a laboratory technician for the Virology and Serology sections. ADDL is fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) and serves as the official diagnostic laboratory for the State of Indiana. Our mission is to help Indiana veterinarians, livestock producers, and animal owners to protect animal health. Candidates will have a unique opportunity to contribute to identifying and preventing animal diseases, and the disease's affecting public health.

 

Pay for this positions starts at $19.25/hour for S2, and $21.50 for S3 (internal applicants - please refer to Purdue's compensation guidelines). All university employees are afforded a generous benefits package including medical/dental/vision insurance, paid time off, and retirement contributions. The lab technician will: perform fluorescent antibody tests for the detection of viral antigens; perform ELISA for detection of antigen and antibodies; perform AGID testing; perform indirect fluorescent antibody tests for the detection of viral antibodies; process a variety of tissues in preparation for the virus isolation testing, and process samples for the electron microscopy negative stain. Assist with equipment maintenance and analyze data in the Virology, Serology and Avian Sections at the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. Duties may vary from day to day across the Virology, Serology or Avian sections based on case load. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

 

This posting may be filled at multiple levels (S2 or S3). The hiring manager will determine the job level based on the skills, experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate.

 

S2 requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, animal sciences, or a related field (Veterinary technical degrees may also be considered)
  • 6 months of relevant lab experience
  • Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience (Associate’s degree and two and a half years of relevant experience)  

 

S3 requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, animal sciences, or a related field (Veterinary technical degrees may also be considered)
  • 2 years of relevant lab experience
  • Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience (Associate’s degree and 4 years of relevant experience)  

Required:

  • Must have the ability to multitask and be flexible in order to accomplish daily tasks as needs arise
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision once trained
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
