Large Animal Handler

Job Summary

This position will provide large animal handling assistance to large animal faculty and staff by performing various types of clinical services related to large animal patient care.  This position will assist with ancillary services such as Diagnostic Imaging and Anesthesia.    Monitor inventory/supplies and order when necessary.  Communicate with clinicians regarding changes in condition of patients.  Perform various record keeping tasks.  May have extended hours and/or come in on an emergency basis including nights, holidays, and weekends.

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Must be expertly skilled in large animal handling
  • Must be able to work under pressure and adapt well in emergency situations
  • Must be comfortable with recognizing patients in distress
  • Must be able to jog horses for extended periods over short distances for lameness evaluations
  • Must be able to handle horses on lunge lines for gait analysis
  • Must be able to move/restrain cattle in a safe manner to protect patient and humans
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to read and write English and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Must have basic computer knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Word/Outlook/electronic email and data entry



  • Degree in animal science or applicable program
  • Two or more years of large animal handling experience in a farm, barn, veterinary practice, or veterinary teaching hospital; specifically horse, bovine, or small ruminants


Additional Information:

  • Hours will be predominantly Monday-Friday 8am-5pm with potential on call evenings, weekends, holidays
