Molecular Beam Epitaxy Engineer

Job Summary

The Quantum Semiconductor Systems Group at Purdue University under the direction of Prof. Michael J. Manfra is searching for a full-time Molecular Beam Epitaxy Engineer to drive innovation in our III-V semiconductor molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth facilities.
We operate three MBE systems housed in the Birck Nanotechnology Center on the Purdue campus. Our group focuses on growth of ultra-high-quality two-dimensional electron gases and hybrid superconductor/semiconductor heterostructures for utilization in novel quantum devices and exploration of topological phases of matter. In the last few years, our group has produced many novel structures utilized in experiments at the forefront quantum science and quantum computing technology. A recent highlight includes demonstration of anyon braiding statistics with samples grown, fabricated, and measured in our group.

Our team members, experimental facilities, and publications may be viewed at: https://manfragroup.org.  We seek a dynamic MBE engineer who has proven experience with MBE growth and system maintenance to join us in the quest to create new quantum technologies. An interest in MBE hardware development to enable new functionality is highly desired. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in physics, materials science, or electrical engineering and 3 years of integrated experience working with MBE systems. In addition to driving novel approaches to heterostructure and tool design, responsibilities will include the following:  molecular beam epitaxy tool operation and optimization of growth conditions, development of new growth protocols, and documentation of layer structure, growth parameters, and characterization results.

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in physics, materials science, or an engineering discipline
  • Three (3) years of integrated experience working with MBE systems.

Skills Needed:

  • Proficiency with MBE equipment and techniques, including growth of III-V materials.
  • Significant understanding of crystallography, growth kinetics, and semiconductor defects
  • An in-depth understanding of ultra-high vacuum principles
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills
  • Strong desire to work in a collaborative team environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience with AFM, SEM, XRD, or other relevant characterization techniques
