Job Summary
The Office of Indiana State Chemist is seeking a Pesticide Investigator. In this role, you will perform a variety of state and federal compliance activities for pesticide laws and regulations throughout the State of Indiana. In addition, you will complete field investigation, inspection, and related compliance activities that are designed to ensure that pesticides are used and distributed safely and legally in Indiana.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Conducting statewide for-cause and not-for-cause pesticide investigation and inspections to ensure compliance with state and federal pesticide regulation
- Responding to use/misuse complaints received through OISC
- Completing investigations in a timely manner with complete and detailed case summaries
- Implementing the collection of environmental samples in support of use/misuse investigations
- Interpreting, communicating and enforcing both state and federal pesticide laws and regulations for regulated industries and the public
- Maintaining positive public relations in representing the Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC) and Purdue University in accomplishing duties, including compliance assistance activities
- Assisting with special projects or programs assigned by OISC management
- Cooperating with Purdue Pesticide Programs and industry in the training of pesticide applicators and technicians
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in Ag engineering, agronomy, animal science, biochemistry, biology, botany, plant pathology, chemistry, criminal justice, environmental sciences, forestry, horticulture, landscape architecture/design, law enforcement, veterinary sciences, criminology, entomology, natural resources or behavioral sciences
- 2 years of experience in pesticide or agricultural inputs production/usage/regulation, environmental or natural resources regulation, law enforcement, conflict management, criminal justice
- In lieu of degree, a combination of education and experience will be considered (Associate's + 4 years of experience; HS/GED + 6 years of experience)
- Strong oral/written and electronic communication and public speaking skills
- Ability to execute situation analysis and comprehend scientific/technical materials
- Ability to interpret laws/regulations, resolve conflicts and prioritize work under stressful environment
- Ability to manage a wide variety of tasks and responsibilities
- Valid U.S. or Canadian drivers license
