Job Summary

Postdoctoral Position in Aerosol Chemistry

Postdoctoral position is open in the area of aerosol chemistry with focus on the chemical imaging of atmospheric particles collected in various field studies.  Qualified candidate will work in a group Dr. A. Laskin at Purdue University on selected projects focused on comprehensive multi-modal offline analyses of particle composition, mixing state, size, and morphology. Elemental composition will be quantified using computer controlled scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis. The chemical bonding speciation of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur in the individual particles will be probed using synchrotron-based scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. These experiments will be used to study effects of anthropogenic and natural emissions on the external and internal (mixing state) composition of individual particles; modifications of their physicochemical properties; understanding their origin and atmospheric transformations; understanding ageing mechanisms that result in increased viscosity of particles; understanding how these changes affect their atmospheric lifetime, heterogeneous reactions, optical and hygroscopic properties.

Position requirements: Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, or chemical engineering, with background in aerosol chemistry and technology. Solid publication record. Prior hands-on experience with applications of the spectro-microscopy techniques for particles analysis: STXM/NEXAFS, SEM/EDX, TEM/EELS, ESEM are of the primary relevance; familiarity with other spectroscopic techniques such as Raman, FTIR and UV-Vis, as well as experience with particle sizing and sampling instrumentation are also essential for this position. Additional requirements include team work experience in the field projects, previous practice with data analysis and mining, assessment of complex multi-instrumental data sets, familiarity with the DOE ARM data archives, computer programming skills, good oral and written communications, interpersonal skills, initiative, creative and innovative thinking.

This position is open for start in fall 2021.
