Post Doc Research Associate Physics & Astronomy

Job Summary

Postdoctoral position in Novel Quantum Characterization Routes in Materials
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana (USA) has an opening for a post-doctoral researcher in the field of novel experiments in quantum materials and devices. The position is for a Quantum Science Center (QSC) Post Doctoral Fellow, funded by the Department of Energy Quantum Information Science Center ( The candidate will join a vibrant young group of experimentalists and computational scientists and will be expected to work both in the laboratory at Purdue, and also strongly collaborate with national laboratories such as ORNL, LANL and FNAL besides many of the scientists associated with the QSC. Besides sensitive quantum measurements at low temperatures, both using transport and scattering, the candidate will also aid in 2D material synthesis, microscopy, and the setup of new characterization tools that aid low-temperature quantum sensing and quantum transport and optical measurements. The candidate will work within the Purdue Quantum Initiative and in close cooperation of the faculty members and the facilities of the Discovery Park, the Birck Nanotechnology Center, and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. As a part of the post-doctoral experience, the candidate will get the opportunities to perform parallel research at large-scale US national facilities such as the Department of Energy national laboratories including the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He will also get grant-writing and mentoring experience and get a chance to compete for his own mini-grant within the Quantum Science Center.

- Starting salary will be at least $4175 per month (higher for candidates with experience).

- The candidate will primarily work with Prof. Arnab Banerjee, and his collaborators.

- The candidate will be expected to set up measurements on a Proteox dilution refrigerator, which is the first Proteox installed in the United States.
- There will be opportunities for presenting results at both domestic and international conferences.
- He will also get significant mentoring experience for both UG and Graduate students.
- He will get a unique chance to write a proposal to compete for his own mini-grant within the Quantum Science Center.
- In addition, you will be eligible for benefits including major medical, vision, and life insurance.

A motivated and collegial candidate with a strong background of publications, or upcoming publications, are encouraged to apply. Knowledge of any of the following will be considered a bonus:
-        Low-noise millikelvin temperature measurements or optics measurements.
-        2D material manipulation in vacuum, glove box and sensitive environments.
-        Sample characterization using bulk, thin film techniques, incuding quantum transport measurments.
-        Knowledge of topological quantum systems and quantum measurements and characterization.
-        Fractional quantum Hall measurements or scattering measurements.

Appointments will be initially for one year with the possibility of renewal annually for up to 3 years. Applicants should have a strong track record of research excellence in a related field and should have or be approaching a PhD in a related discipline (Physics, Electrical Engineering, Material Science). Please include a CV, a brief (1 page) statement of research interests, and contact information for two/three references. All applications received by April 30, 2022, will be fully considered with the desired start date of September 2022. This position is subject to the University's background check policy and QSC funding.
