President - Indiana State Poultry Association

Job Summary

The Indiana poultry industry is highly ranked nationally in both production and processing. Our state is first in commercial duck, third in laying hens and eggs, fourth in turkeys, and has both national and Indiana based broiler production and processing. The candidate will represent these industries, keeping them appraised of policy changes affecting production and processing. Key elements of this position are to:


  • Execute and administer the programs of the Indiana State Poultry Association (ISPA)
  • Guide policy affecting all elements of poultry production
  • Lead Indiana's National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) and overall poultry disease control programs collaborating with the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH).
  • Educate government and university officials, elected officials, and the public about the poultry industry, its economic impact on Indiana, and the industry’s needs for it to continue to flourish
  • Secure financial resources and account for the resources required to continue and expand ISPA programs
  • Through Cooperative Agreements, collaborate with USDA, Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) for surveillance and control of poultry diseases in commercial, small flock and exhibition poultry, waterfowl, and game birds
  • Develop educational programs with Purdue’s Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab (ADDL), Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH), and other agencies to train producers to become Indiana NPIP Authorized Agents and Authorized Testing Agents
  • Promote and educate consumers on the benefits of consuming turkey, egg products, and all of poultry when resources are available
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 8 years of relevant experience with the poultry industry, other organizational management, government, academia or non-profit leadership
  • Experience in seeking and balancing a wide variety of funding sources including membership dues, NPIP program fees, Federal cooperative agreements, state grants, and industry check-off funds
  • Ability to lead and unite a diverse and fast-growing industry valued at over $1.5 billion
  • Ability and ready willingness to communicate individually in writing or by phone to establish consensus
  • Ability to protect the industry and trade through Indiana and national leadership in disease monitoring and control by working with Federal and state government leaders
  • Ability to take national level leadership roles, representing the wide variety of Indiana poultry industry sectors, as well as in the veterinary medical and poultry health arenas
  • Self-confidence and strong interpersonal skills particularly when publicly representing the industry such as in zoning and environmental hearings; Testimony and individual discussions must be poignant, yet not pointed
  • Strong writing abilities for clarifying issues in correspondence with legislators and regulators, as well as articles to update and convey information to producers
  • Ability to lead meetings and bring diverse interests into agreement; oral communication and presentation skills are vital to success in this arena
  • Familiarity with Microsoft operating systems and common office software as well as the capacity to adapt to specific software utilized in carrying out the duties of the organization
  • Travel
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license
