Principal Scientist - Medicinal Chemist, Team Leader - Center for Alzheimer's Disease Drug Discover

The Principal Scientist - Medicinal Chemistry, Team Leader for the Alzheimer’s Disease Drug Discovery Center (ADDD Center) within the Purdue University Institute for Drug Discovery will be responsible for synthesizing small molecules, optimizing hit series into leads, and assisting with the overall strategy of the Medicinal Chemistry Research Core.  The activities of this position will primarily be at the bench performing chemical synthesis.  The Medicinal Chemistry Team Lead will meet regularly with other Center research staff to identify the most promising Alzheimer’s Disease targets, develop strategies to synthesize small molecule modulators of these targets, and review in vitro & in vivo testing data to refine small molecules in an effort to develop lead compound series and eventually clinical candidates.  This position will also assist with the management of day-to-day operations of up to 4 junior chemists, but will have no direct reports.  

This position will be supported for the duration of the five-year contract of the ADDD Center.


  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology or closely related field
  • Five (5) years of experience beyond post-doc preferably working in a medicinal chemistry group in a pharmaceutical/biotech company 
  • Knowledge of general chemistry and laboratory techniques
  • Expert in synthetic methodologies, retro-synthetic analyses, purification, and verification of chemical structure (e.g. NMR, mass spec, FT-IR, etc.)
  • Experience designing and synthesizing structure-activity relationship (SAR) sets
  • Experience with designing medicinal chemistry strategies to optimize characteristics of hit molecules (e.g. potency, solubility, stability, absorption, etc.) to generate lead series and eventual clinical candidates
  • Experience in overseeing day-to-day activities of junior scientists
  • Advanced skills in communication, word processing, and presentation of data/results
  • Familiarity with Microsoft office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)


  • Experience with developing blood-brain-barrier penetrant compounds
  • Experience with generating basic formulations
