Job Summary
The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine (PVM), Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS), invites applications for a full-time (12 month) Clinical or Tenure-Track position in Veterinary Ophthalmology at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The successful candidate will join three board certified ophthalmologists, and a growing team including registered veterinary technician, veterinary assistant, ophthalmology client liaison, and three ophthalmology residents. The successful candidate will have access to a dedicated ophthalmology operating suite, two state-of-the-art operating microscopes, two phacoemulsification units, anterior and posterior segment digital photography equipment (including an infrared camera, SL19 plus, and RetCam), diode and CO2 lasers, ocular ultrasonography equipment (high resolution and ultrasound biomicroscopy units), Spectralis OCT and OCTA, ERG unit capable of pattern and multi-focal ERG, HRT3 confocal microscope, and an on-site CT and MRI. The caseload is comprised predominantly of small animal and equine cases with additional farm animal and exotic cases. PVM is highly supportive of individual faculty career growth and development. A formal faculty mentoring program is in place and mentorship of junior faculty members is a high priority.
Qualifications
Qualifications for the position include a DVM or equivalent degree, and completion of an ophthalmology residency program approved by the American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ABVO) or European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ECVO), or board certification by the ABVO/ECVO. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. A background check is required for employment in this position.
General Information
The Purdue University Veterinary Hospital recently completed a large expansion with the opening of the David and Bonnie Brunner Purdue Veterinary Medical Hospital Complex, a 162,500-square-foot facility. The new complex includes the Small Animal Hospital, which adds 65,000 square feet to the existing small animal facilities, as well as the Equine Hospital and the Farm Animal Hospital. These facilities provide exceptional resources for teaching, clinical service, and interdisciplinary research, enabling faculty to deliver outstanding patient care while educating the next generation of veterinary professionals.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will actively participate in the learning, discovery, and engagement activities of the PVM and the VCS department with a focus on learning and engagement. Important activities include: Teaching/Learning: Participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM and veterinary nursing curricula, clinical teaching in the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital (PUVH), and participation in training house officers. Clinical Service: Providing excellent clinical service to both large and small animal patients (typical time commitment: 30 -50% Tenure Track and 60-70% Clinical Track); instructing and supervising veterinary and veterinary nursing students, and house officers; and building strong relationships with referring veterinarians. Discovery: All faculty are expected to collaborate on clinical research projects. Research that complements the interests and strengths of current faculty is ideal but can also be tailored to the candidate’s specific background and interests. Strong internal grant programs are available to support faculty and resident research. Faculty also participate in university-wide graduate programs (MS and PhD). Service and Engagement: Faculty are also expected to participate in committee work, professional organizations and community service, deliver of continuing education programs and other appropriate professional activities.
