Professor Clinical Assistant

Job Summary

Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) - West Lafayette, a regional campus of IUSM located in West Lafayette, Indiana University on the Purdue University campus, is seeking an experienced, full-time pre-clinical medical educator and leader to serve as a medical school education faculty. Candidates with experience in pre-clinical and clinical medical student or pharmacy student teaching and course leadership are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will apply clinical correlations to basic science principles wit a focus in clinical pharmacology.


The successful candidate will hold a PharmD, MD/DO, and /or PhD in life sciences. Expertise in clinical, medical, and pharmacy applications and experience in collaborating with clinicians are desirable for candidates with a PhD in life sciences.

Job Responsibilities

IUSM-WL students study basic and clinical sciences in their first two pre-clinical years (Phase 1), with a focus on small group and interactive learning modalities. They spend their final two years in the clinical clerkship setting/ This position would focus on teaching and facilitating an optimal learning experience for pre-clinical medical students on West Lafayette campus (24 students per class in Phase 1), including direct teaching, small group facilitation, and course leadership, and also include interaction with the teaching of clinical topics for clerkship student at the campus. Teaching and facilitation will focus on clinical integration with the basic science concepts in pharmacology/pharmacotherapy, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, and microbiology, and other related disciplines. Experience with small group facilitation, interprofessional education, and other interactive teaching modalities will be essential. The position would carry the expectation of serving as a site course director depending on the candidate's qualifications and assisting to provide oversight for the pre-clinical curriculum. 

College and Department

The successful candidate will have a full-time, non-tenure track position within Purdue University in the Department of Medical Education, and an adjunct appointment with an appropriate IUSM department. Pharmacists would have an adjunct appointment within Purdue College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice. Clinically active practitioners will have the option of continuing to practice as part of their employment and must hold the appropriate state license. Teaching within the Purdue College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice can be available for pharmacists, depending on the candidate's qualifications. Opportunity to actively engage in some from of research or scholarship will also be considered integral to the position. Screening of Applications will begin August 5, 2022 and continue until the position is filled. A background check will be required for employment in this position.

Preferred Experiences and Skills

  • Previous teaching experience in pre-clinical medicine, specifically in pharmacology, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, and microbiology, and other related fields
  • Residency training or equivalent clinical experience for PharmD's
  • Board certification for MD/DO's
  • Experience in clinical practice in a hospital or clinic setting
  • Understanding and practice of pedagogy as it relates to medical education, including small group facilitation and interactive teaching modalities
  • Participation with faculty development
  • Experience with inter-professional education and collaborating with professionals in a complex organization 
  • Experience in teaching, curriculum development and implementation
  • Ability to combine administrative, education and teaching responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with faculty from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds
  • Participation in academic scholarly activities
