Job Description
The primary role of the RecWell Belay Staff position is to support the daily operations of the climbing wall by ensuring participant safety, providing excellent customer service, and fostering an inclusive and engaging climbing environment. The goal of this position is to give students valuable real-world experience in a collegiate recreation environment. This position should work 4-12 hours per week during the current semester. Those hours may be worked in any combination, at the discretion of the direct supervisor. The RecWell Belay position must be reliable, organized, responsible, and flexible. They must also be ambitious, detail-oriented, creative, and driven.
Qualifications
- Belay competent at Purdue's climbing wall
- High school diploma or equivalent and minimum of one semester of college coursework successfully completed
- Must be actively enrolled at Purdue University, Purdue Global or a local accredited college.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
- Flexible and dependable with a strong attention to detail
- Problem solving, logic and reasoning skills
- Customer service oriented
- Ability to multi-task and work within deadlines
- Ability to work independently and with a team
- Be timely and organized

Position Responsibilities
- Maintain safety and risk management standards of the department by monitoring climbing area activities and enforcing facility policies.
- Serve as a positive ambassador for the Climbing Wall and Recreation & Wellness department.
- Conduct check-ins, process waivers, and perform equipment rentals and returns.
- Provide belays and perform skill checks for climbers.
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and organization for the climbing facilities, including the CW office.
- Maintain confidentiality and exhibit professional conduct when handling sensitive information
- Responsible for all scheduled shifts (based on class/exam schedules for the semester)
- Must attend all scheduled staff meetings to gain and/or share pertinent information
- Assist with risk management and emergency procedures as needed.
- Exhibit friendliness, diplomacy, and tact when responding to customers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
