Refuse/Recycle Equipment Operator - Grounds

Job Summary

Operate specialized equipment used for refuse disposal and recycling. Maneuver vehicles/trucks in congested, narrow, tight areas around people, vehicles and structures. Remove refuse and various materials from areas across campus. Assist in shredding of confidential materials and entering data into software program when needed. *Required to work overtime for special events; on 24-hour callback for emergencies.


  • High school diploma/GED
  • Minor equipment maintenance skills
  • Ability to pass departmental driving test; demonstrating ability to back truck up a narrow ramp at least 100 yds.
  • Ability to lift, push or pull up to 50 lbs. frequently during course of day, and up to 100 lbs. daily
  • Ability to work outdoors 100% of the time in temperatures below 32 degrees and above 90 degrees
  • Exposed to conditions associated with Refuse and Recycling such as dust, odors, mold, toxic chemicals (unsecured containers), pollen, noise and dead animals
  • Ability to climb in and out of Refuse Truck frequently on a daily basis
  • Ability to pass required medical exams
  • A valid US or Canadian driver's license
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within first 90 days of employment


  • Two years of experience in the operations of refuse/recycling equipment or similar type equipment such as semi-trucks or heavy equipment
  • Knowledge of Purdue campus

Additional Information:

  • Purdue will not sponsor an employment authorization for this position
  • The external new hire hourly rate of pay for this position is $14.15/per hour
  • This posting represents five vacancies
  • The hours for this position are Monday through Friday; 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Occasional overtime for special events; on 24-hour callback from emergencies
  • A Background Check will be required for employment in this position
  • FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for Overtime)
