Research & Extension Associate (Viticulture)

The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture is seeking a self-motivated individual with expertise in viticulture to contribute to the Purdue Wine Grape Team extension and research. Responsibilities for this position will include but are not limited to:

 

  • Conducting viticulture research in the field at the Meigs Horticulture Research Farm, offsite at the Southwest Purdue Ag Center and in commercial vineyards, and on-campus in the greenhouse and laboratory
  • Directing projects including experimental design, field plot management, data management and analysis for research and demonstration projects
  • Mentoring students and other staff and delegate work and supervise undergraduate students
  • Developing and delivering materials for extension education programs such as newsletters, bulletins, webinars and videos
  • Participating in Extension events such as field days, workshops, and conferences
  • Communicating with team members, facility managers, and external partners for the coordination of project-wide goals and efforts
  • Assisting in developing research grants, writing and submitting research progress reports, writing and submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals, and delivering presentations to the scientific community
  • Facilitating research of graduate students by managing research materials, ordering supplies, maintaining instruments and equipment, and coordinating the use of field and lab space
Required:
  • Masters' degree in Viticulture, Horticulture or a related plant science field
  • 1 year of experience conducting viticulture research or closely related
  • Valid Indiana pesticide applicator’s license or ability to obtain within 2 months of employment
  • In lieu of degree consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (Bachelors's degree + 3 years of related experience)
  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with social media platforms
  • Knowledge of integrated pest management in viticulture
  • Experience with designing, evaluating, analyzing, and summarizing field experiments
  • Ability to manage and analyze datasets using statistical tools (ARM, R, SAS, etc.)
  • General laboratory experience
  • Ability to work with, mentor, train, and supervise undergraduate and graduate students
  • Ability to develop program specific safety and standard operating procedures
  • Ability to maintain working areas in an organized, efficient, and safe manner
  • Must be able to perform physical work duties such as lifting a minimum of 50  pounds and to work on their feet for extended periods
  • Ability to work both in the lab and outdoors including occasional work in inclement weather
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver’s license
  • Travel and overnight stays (approximately 10 nights/year)

 

Preferred:

  • 2+ years of experience conducting viticulture research
  • Project management and supervisory experience
