Research Economist

Job Summary

The Center for Global Trade Analysis, housed in the Department of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University, is the home of the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP), a global network of researchers and policy makers conducting quantitative analysis of international policy issues. The data team member will contribute to the maintenance, development and documentation of the GTAP Data Base and related data and software products through direct contribution and collaboration with external contributors, maintain an active research agenda in an area of interest to the Center and participate in GTAP outreach activities including communication with stakeholders and other experts and teaching in the GTAP short courses.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Interact with data contributors to incorporate new or updated data into the GTAP data base
  • Undertake improvements to the existing data base construction programs, using research results and new tools to improve existing methods such as changes in the disaggregation module, treatment of commodity and factor taxes or updating the ‘build’ scripts
  • Participate as principal or co-principal investigator in research projects. This includes preparation and presentation of research papers, technical papers and reports for sponsors
  • Outreach and Education Report on database development to GTAP consortium members at the annual board meetings and other database stakeholders
  • Participate in discussions on future directions of the GTAP Data Base both within the Center, at Board meetings and as part of working committees
  • Teach in the GTAP short courses and in the preparation of instructional materials

What We're Looking For:

  • Master's degree in economics, agricultural economics, operations research, industrial engineering, computer science, or a related discipline 
  • 3 years of economic research experience
  • Experience should cover one or more of the following economic domains: input-output economics, energy economics, and/or the economics of trade and protection
  • Experience dealing with large data sets (preferably Input-Output tables) and constrained optimization or equivalent
  • Demonstrated aptitude in quantitative economics
  • Knowledge of mathematical programming, scripting languages such Perl or Python, very high-level programming languages such as GEMPACK, GAMS, R, or MATLAB
  • Use of software development tools such as build management tools, version management tools, or shell scripting

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in global economic analysis, with an emphasis on economic modeling
