Research Engineer (Physical Vapor Deposition)

Job Summary

The engineering group at the Birck Nanotechnology Center, in the heart of the Purdue University campus, is seeking a new member to join our dynamic team supporting leading-edge research in micro and nanotechnology.  Our Research Engineering team members enjoy a diverse set of career-enhancing opportunities supporting nearly 500 users in a world-class cleanroom and laboratory facility.  The Birck Nanotechnology Center enables groundbreaking research in nanophotonics, MEMS devices and applications, quantum computing, bio-nano device applications, new material development, and many other engineering and scientific areas.  We’re seeking an experienced semiconductor engineer who has a background working in a cleanroom, specifically with vacuum deposition equipment.  Our candidate will be a person who likes to solve challenging problems associated with processing equipment, who enjoys training and mentoring student researchers, and enjoys working in a team environment. Our team members interface with faculty groups to support and enable original research in a broad field of applications.  Because of the outstanding capabilities of the Birck Center, we also attract users from industry and other academic institutions if you’re a semiconductor engineer who enjoys working with your hands to fix complex equipment in a cleanroom environment. Required:

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, EET, MET, Physics, Materials Science & Engineering or related
  • Two years experience in cleanroom processing
  • In lieu of a degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience
  • Experience in processing and repair of cleanroom semiconductor processing equipment, including vacuum systems and physical vapor deposition systems
  • Knowledge of cleanroom protocol and contamination control
  • Ability to work in an environment with diverse research participants who require training and mentoring 
  • Working knowledge of related processing and characterization equipment operation
  • Ability to analyze process results and to use discretion and independent judgment
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment with scientists and engineers
  • Ability to solicit and evaluate advice from and interact with appropriate professionals, including engineering and scientific staff
  • Ability to develop new techniques necessary to perform new frontiers of research
  • Ability to develop information to disseminate to users and potential users of the facility
  • Ability to teach and mentor others in current techniques, and use equipment related to the research projects, and ability to interact with multiple levels of customers, both internal and external to Purdue University

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of process gases and safety as it related to proper gas delivery methods

Additional Information:

  • This position requires working 5 days per week, during normal business hours, while also being available nights and weekends to respond to critical issues and emergencies
  • Purdue will not sponsor employment authorization for this position
