Research Scientist (Nursing & Public Health)

Job Summary

An exciting partnership between Purdue University and the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) has been announced to better prepare the state for the next pandemic by improving pandemic response, health equity, and health outcomes in Indiana counties considered most vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic and, by doing so, to raise the entire public health system to new levels of connectivity and operational excellence. 
Healthcare engineering is a trans-disciplinary field applying principles of engineering, science, and management to improve healthcare delivery.  As a Research Scientist, you will facilitate the trans-disciplinary collaboration necessary for the practical application of research to improve healthcare delivery as a contributor to the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering’s mission. Ideal candidates will have specialized training on theories, models, and frameworks for understanding how best to ensure that evidence-based strategies aimed at improving health and preventing disease are effectively delivered in clinical practice or the policy arena. 
In this role, you will

  • Apply advanced domain knowledge in healthcare delivery with direct delivery for evaluation of the CDC grant
  • Participate in fieldwork supporting the FIT teams to advise and support the team in the evaluation of the outcomes of the grant  
  • Develop new metrics for evaluation of social determinants of health and impact on health equity at a community and population health level
  • Design, direct, and lead independent research projects
  • Work either independently or with faculty to conduct translational healthcare engineering research which improves healthcare delivery
  • Work with established healthcare providers serving as RCHE research partners and provide leadership for the research project
  • Develop new healthcare research partner relationships

Purdue Healthcare Advisors (PHA), a unit of the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering, will convene partners, develop community-based strategies, build and improve public health processes and infrastructure, create communication feedback loops between local and state health departments, and report on and evaluate the grant to the CDC. Approximately $10.5M in funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the IDOH will support a two-year program—from June of 2021 to July of 2023. Purdue's intervention model aims to develop mitigation and prevention resources and services; improve data collection and reporting for populations experiencing a disproportionate burden of COVID-19 impact; leverage infrastructure support for pandemic prevention and control; and mobilize collaborators to advance health equity and address social determinants of health (SDOH).



  • Ph.D. in nursing, public health, epidemiology, bioinformatics, biomedical informatics, or a related field
  • Three (3) years of experience in a healthcare setting with experience in direct delivery of patient care and/ or support services (hospitals, clinics, social service agencies, public health, or behavioral health)
  • Expertise in programming languages, and AI methods in health and life sciences
  • Expertise in advanced computational methods, graph databases, and structured and unstructured data mining and visualization tools
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration skills leading and participating as a team member
  • Quality Improvement experience making complex changes in the practice environment
  • Public speaking skills, podium presentations at national conferences or meetings
  • Responsibility for improvement of healthcare quality and innovation facilitating and leading interdisciplinary innovation of evidence-based applied research with demonstrated and measurable results
  • Research grant writing experience
  • Competency in healthcare knowledge and research methodology including advanced quantitative analysis and implementation science


  • Six (6)  years of experience in direct delivery of healthcare

  • This position requires the ability to travel within the state up to 50% of the time
