Job Summary

As a Senior Carpenter for the Operations and Maintenance Department, you will:

  • Provide carpentry construction and maintenance duties for Birck Nanotechnology Center. This facility is a highly complex facility that is not similar to any other buildings on the Purdue campus. A combination of highly complex systems distribute ultra-clean air and utilities through the building and sophisticated control and alarm systems ensure cleanliness and safety. Due to the complexity of the building, specialized training is required to perform all maintenance duties in the building that are unlike any currently being performed at Purdue University. Adherence to strict guidelines/protocols is required to ensure the safety of the employees working in the facility and to support the research that is being performed in the facility. Employees will be required to work around hazardous production material (HPM) on a daily basis. Must be able to train, supervise, and coordinate tasks performed by other crafts persons of the same trade when assistance is needed within the Nanotechnology building. Required to carry a pager.  Subject to 24 hour callback for building system breakdowns and/or emergencies.

What We Are Looking For

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma/GED is required. 
  • 4 years of experience in carpentry construction, installation, maintenance and repair, including education or experience in the use and development of blueprints and schematics required. 

 

Skills needed:

  • Must pass all applicable training required for performing maintenance within the Nanotechnology building and associated cleanrooms. (Including but not limited to completing Birck training matrix and safety training.)
  • Utilize this training to perform work in the Nanotechnology building and cleanrooms.  
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations necessary.
  • Must be able to perform carpentry construction, installation, maintenance and repair, working from blueprints, drawings, or oral instructions and using saws, drills, jointers, planers, routers and other hand tools and power equipment required.
  • Experience using aluminum honeycomb (e.g., Plascore) wall panels and wall system (studs, mullions, lintels, floor track, ceiling track, trim, etc.), PVC wall panels and wall system, Lexan and Plexiglas sheet goods, vinyl and plastic heat welding and laboratory countertop materials desired.
  • Knowledge of vibration base installation and pedestal epoxies.
  • Must be able to lift 50-80lbs frequently, and up to 100lbs or more occasionally.
  • Successfully complete supervisory training courses as directed and serve as lead carpenter on all Birck Tool installs.
  • Computer skills/familiarity with word processor and spreadsheets required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
