Job Summary
The Senior Farm Research Technician supports both the farm operations and research missions of the Animal Sciences Research and Education Center (ASREC). Working independently and as part of a team, you will contribute to the daily care and management of livestock and crops, operation and maintenance of farm equipment, and support of faculty and student research projects. You will assist with feed and forage production, data collection, facility maintenance, and on an as needed basis with animal care. In addition, you will also help ensure compliance with research protocols, safety, and environmental standards. This role requires hands-on agricultural work in all weather conditions and the ability to operate and maintain complex farm equipment.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Assisting with daily farm operations, including planting, harvesting, and forage production to meet the nutritional needs of ASREC livestock units
- Operating, maintaining, and repairing agricultural equipment used to support field research such as tractors, planters, sprayers, and harvesters
- Working with the Assistant Director and other staff to schedule and complete seasonal research related field activities and ensure compliance with environmental and pesticide regulations
- Maintaining grounds, fences, and water systems to support safe and efficient farm operations
- Participating in planning for crop rotation, soil health, and nutrient management practices that align with research and sustainability goals
- Operating and calibrating agricultural equipment associated with crop, forage, and livestock production
- Operating Purdue University trucks and Class A commercial vehicles transporting grain and other farm commodities
- Implementing and operating precision agriculture equipment and livestock handling equipment. (SeedSense, CEBIS, CNH software, etc.)
- Performing regular inspections and repairs on vehicles, implements, and specialized tools
- Identifying and troubleshooting mechanical problems and coordinate major repairs with supervisors or vendors
- Assisting in fabricating, modifying, or welding equipment as needed to meet research and operational objectives
- Maintaining accurate maintenance records for all farm equipment and vehicles
- Supporting faculty and graduate student research by maintaining facilities, equipment, and systems essential to ongoing experiments and livestock management
- Ensuring proper operation of animal housing, feeding, watering, and manure-handling systems to meet research and welfare standards
- Assisting with the construction, modification, and repair of pens, gates, and equipment used in animal trials
- Collaborating with researchers to adapt facilities and infrastructure to experimental needs, ensuring functionality, safety, and compliance with research protocols
- Participating in training, meetings, and outreach activities as directed
- Providing occasional tours and demonstrations to students or visitors to highlight ASREC’s role in teaching, research, and extension
- Supporting a team-oriented work environment and assist other units when needed
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree
- 2 years of relevant experience that includes: any combination of operating, calibrating, maintaining, repairing and fabricating equipment including tractors, planters, sprayers, harvesters, and other implements, and building facilities
- In lieu of degree, an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered (Associates + 4 years of experience; HS/GED + 6 years of experience)
- Basic Computer Skills using Outlook, Excel, Google Docs, etc.
- Strong communication skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills to provide good customer service, demonstrating a strong service orientation
- Public relations skills to work congenially with the public and staff, displaying a good nature and attitude
- A valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license
