Senior Instructional Data Scientist

Job Summary

Purdue University and The Data Mine Team are looking for a candidate that is comfortable working with research computing clusters and Unix systems and can develop models in predictive analytics or deep learning to become its next Senior Instructional Data Scientist. As the senior instructional data scientist will report to the managing director of data science as part of The Data Mine team. The position will play a key role to drive collaboration within The Data Mine team and the success of the student projects during the academic year. The role will focus on student support, technical administration, analytics content development, and accessible design. Our driving goal is to enable students of all backgrounds to learn data analytics techniques and to make that knowledge available to everyone. A key responsibility of the role will be the development of students’ skills in analytics and the guidance of sponsored research projects in collaboration with corporate partners. This position will be on-site at Purdue’s campus in West Lafayette.



  • B.S. in analytics-related major (mathematics, statistics, computer science, computer information technology, predictive analytics)
  • At least 4 years of experience in project management, consulting, undergraduate teaching, or analytics content development. 
  • Other B.S. degrees with relevant experience will be considered.

Critical Skills:

  • Helping others (students) build skills in data science
  • Experience in Python or R
  • Background with Jupyter Notebooks and Integrated Development Environments (IDE)
  • Effective online communication and collaboration
  • Project management through the full data science lifecycle
  • Concise communication of analytical results to business stakeholders


Beneficial Technical Skills:

  • Experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP)
  • Advanced data visualization
  • Working with containers (Docker or Singularity)
  • Familiarity with SQL
