Senior Laboratory Technician - Virology

Job Summary

The Virology Section Senior Lab Technician is responsible for acting as lead technician with a working knowledge or on-going competency of all assays performed in the Virology section. Virology technicians and student lab assistants report to the senior technician in the absence of the laboratory supervisor. This individual also assists the supervisor with training of other technicians and students in the section as well as new test development/assay optimization. The position requires performing the essential day-to-day virology testing in the section following standard operating procedures, with little to no supervision, for detection of infectious diseases of animals. This includes surveillance testing for high consequence diseases. Specific diagnostic testing this technician will perform include virus isolation (including cell culture), virus neutralization, ELISA, PCR, electron microscopy and fluorescent antibody staining.

 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, animal sciences, or related field (veterinary technical degrees may also be considered)
  • 2 years of lab or other related experience
  • Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience (Associate’s degree and 4 years of relevant work experience)                 
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique and other laboratory skills such as pipetting
  • Ability to multi-task and move from one task to another while maintaining attention to detail
  • Must possess strong time management skills and ability to work independent of direct supervision
